I looked up many dictionaries to gather information for this peculiar Thai letter ฤ . I found many interesting cultural anecdotes in my search. I think my notes below may be an interesting Sunday read and something to muse on, so, I share.

There are 36 words beginning with ฤ and 80 words with ฤ elsewhere listed in the Royal Institute Dictionary (Th-Th) [RID Th]. So, this is a small set of objects to study. However, within this set there are words that are in common every day use. We can do a little exercise in finding those words ourselves or in a Thai language class. The exercise in looking up references [dictionaries, Wiki webs, search engines, and etc.] should be a ritual developed in learning. Because we don't know, then we ask. But, we have many answers, which one is right, complete and up-to-date or still in use. This is the underlining of information analyses. We can use a framework like 'Galamasutta' (Tipitaka) to choose what useful for us. So,  we can use that with confidence. It is an exercise in using facts rather than other bases (eg. lobha โลภ, dosa โกรธ, moha หลง). A well-worth personal development, don't you think?

[Added 10/6/2567: There are only 3 words with ฦ in [RID Th] : ฦๅ  ฦๅชา ฦๅสาย. All have the same meaning as if they spelled with ฤ. Are they there to cater for people who can't say ร but can say ล? ]

ฤๅษีผสม น. ชื่อไม้ล้มลุก

ฤๅษีแปลงสาร น. ชื่อวิธีเขียนหนังสือลับแห่งไทยโบราณกลับตัวอักษรข้างหลังมาไว้ข้างหน้า, โดยปริยายหมายความว่า เปลี่ยนข้อความเดิมให้มีความหมายตรงกันข้าม.
ฤๅษีเลี้ยงลิง (สำ) น. ผู้เลี้ยงเด็กซุกซนหรือปกครองคนหมู่มากที่ไม่อยู่ในระเบียบวินัยย่อมเดือดร้อนรำคาญ.

Note  as we can see from my notes that not all words with ฤ are derived directly from Sanskrit. There are many words of Thai invention/origin added to the Thai language which have no correspondence in Sanskrit. What are the stories of for the creation of these words? Thai etymology is a very limited area. 

[Amended 10/6/2567: corrected typing errors and this “Thai etymology is a very limited area” - I mean "Thai etymology is a very sparse area for cultural explorations. There are not a lot of online materials, sign posts, examples and promoters to attract more tourists to the area. We need more studies, public relations, and promotion for the area to develop and add value to society. 

(You guessed it. To attract tourists (money), we need ‘attractions’, facilities, transports, festivities and activities, … for people to enjoy even for a few hours. These are what soft power opportunists are working on, they give less emphases on ‘culture, community, society', but more on tourist money. ;-) ]
