In horse racing 'straight' is noun meaning the last 'straight way/track' before the finish line. ;-)

I think strait is a channel (of water/sea) between 2 seas/oceans. "Area" is more or less correct but "area" implies broad (width x length) space. "channel" gives a sense of narrow strip/pathway... ;-)
