เป็น สรรพนาม แทนที่ บางสิ่ง

ในประโยค ปฏิเสธ และ คำถาม

ตามหลัง “if” / “whether” และ

ตามหลัง กริยา เช่น “prevent” “ban” “avoid” เช่น

‘Would you like anything else?’

‘There’s never anything at all, please let us know.’

‘We hope to prevent anything unpleasant from happening.’

ข้อสังเกต

ความแตกต่าง ระหว่าง “anything” และ “something”

เป็นเช่นเดียวกับ ความแตกต่างระหว่าง “any” และ “some”

ตามข้อสังเกต ต่อไปนี้

ใช้ “anything at all” เมื่อไม่สำคัญว่าเป็นสิ่งใด เช่น

‘I’m so hungry, I’ll eat anything.’

หมายถึง “สิ่งใดที่ สำคัญ” เช่น

‘Is there anything (หมายถึง มีจริงบ้างไหม)in these rumors?’

เมื่อใช้ “anything” ในสำนวน

“anything but definitely not” เช่น

‘The hotel was anything but cheap.’ หมายถึง “ราคาแพง”

“anything but” เช่น

‘as happy, (as quick) as anything.’ (ไม่เป็นทางการ) หมายถึง

“very happy” หรือ “very quick”

“I felt as pleased as anything.” (British English ใช้ like anything)

หมายถึง “very much”

“He isn’t anything like my first boss.”

สามารถใช้ “something” หรือ “anything” เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ “กรรม”

ใช้ “something” เมื่อ ต้องการได้ คำตอบว่า “yes”

เช่น “ถ้าคุณคิดว่า ผมได้พบ บางสิ่ง”

คุณอาจถามว่า “Did you find something?”
