This Spring downunder in Deamland is very dry. In facts it is so dry that it is not funny anymore. But they say, weather is not under our control. We can only stand chin up and take the blows -- like a man ;-).

So, let us talk about this 'funny'. I looked up a few 'famous dictionaries' and here are some results for 'ตลก':

ตลก
ตลก: [ตะหฺลก] ก. ทําให้คนอื่นขบขันด้วยคําพูดหรือกิริยาท่าทางเป็นต้น; โดยปริยายหมายความว่า แกล้งทําให้คนอื่นเข้าใจผิด เช่น เล่นตลก. ว. ขบขัน, ที่ทําให้คนอื่นขบขันด้วยคําพูดหรือกิริยาท่าทางเป็นต้น เช่น หนังตลก, เรียกผู้ที่ทําให้คนอื่นขบขันว่า ตัวตลก, เรียกเรื่องที่ทําให้ขบขันหรือเข้าใจผิดว่า เรื่องตลก.

And 2 dictionaries cannot agree on the spelling of:
มุกตลก (From the Royal Instititue Thai Dictionary)

มุขตลก (From NECTEC's Lexitron Thai-English dictionary version 2)

What is the possible etymology of ตลก?
I looked for its possible root from tha Pali language. There are few occurences of ตลก 'ta loka' in the Tipitaka :

tāta lokasmiṃ [this worldly person] (2 times)
vata lokasmiṃ [this religious person] (5 times)

tāta: 1. father; 2. son. (m.) (and pl. tātā) used as term of affectionate, friendly or respectful address to one or more persons, both younger & older than the speaker.

vata: a religious duty or observance. (nt.)

But there is another possibility:  in Pali

    ta: that; (demonstrative pron.)
         (so = he; sā = she; taṃ = that thing, ...).
    loka: the world; the population. (m.)

Together 'ta loka' means

    That's life!

Hi krutoiting :  All I know about "ถุงตะเคียว" is what I recall seeing in a งานบวช many many years ago. The "Official Thai Dictionary" (for "some" --but not "all"-- Thais) says:

ถุงตะเครียว
ถุงตะเครียว, ถุงตะเคียว: น. ถุงที่ถักด้วยด้ายหรือไหมเป็นต้นเป็นตาโปร่ง มีหูรูด สําหรับหุ้มถลกบาตร (ใช้เฉพาะในพิธีอุปสมบท).

A possible Pali word may be :  "taketi" = ro cover. (But I have no other supporting evidence).

Sorry can;t be of help with what I know now. Maybe I could find more info. Will let you know.

I have to be more careful what I say (...er write) ;-)  You pointed out that Thai words can have more than once meanings all equally likely even within the same context.  So, ขำ.. ไม่ขัน can mean quietly funny (as in ขำ: น. สิ่งหรือข้อความที่มีนัย ไม่ควรเปิดเผย ) or beauty un-advertised (as in ขำ: ว. มีลักษณะหน้าตาคมชวนให้มอง) or ขำขัน = ตลก

I read your view on "land-trees-money" and still wondering about its story in the backdrop. Maybe you will write more?
