ANALYTICAL STUDY OF KARMA, HELL AND HEAVEN IN BUDDHISM
By Uthai Eksaphang
The present thesis is entitled, “Analytical Study of Karma, Hell And Heaven in Buddhism.” I must clarify that Buddhism is a vast area and I have chosen only “Theravada Buddhism” for the purpose of my study. This topic is of my great interest because in my country i.e., Thailand, Theravada Buddhism is lived in practice. Therefore, I had a feeling from the beginning of my study to give a serious thought over an important issue which is directly related with human life. We find that human life is viewed from many angles and in philosophy this becomes a crucial problem because philosophy and religion do not take life as it appears. In philosophy and religion, life means where from I and where to ? That is, it is a question of the origin and development of life, the purpose and the aim of life.
With this view in my mind I have looked into the problems of life. To me, it seems that human being, in the world are faced with a lot of problems. It is the problem related with the birth, age, seeral kinds of sufferings and there are many economic and social problems. These days mankind is faced with the problems of War, terrorism and many other problems making life miserable.
I have divided the whole thesis into six chapters excluding conclusion. In the first chapter I have started with the question i.e. what is Karma in Theravada Buddhist philosophy ? It deals with the meaning of Karma and its laws related with Hell and Heaven.
According to Buddhism there are four faiths or beliefs or confidences:
1.belife in Karma or confidence in accordance with the law of action.
2.belife in the consequences of action.
3.belife in the individual ownership of action.
4.belife in the Enlightenment of the Buddha.
As far as the subject of Hell and Heaven is concerned, Hell is a place, where people with evil actions in this world, live. It can be also a mental experience of people, or in another words we can say that Hell exists in the mind of human beings. In Tripitaka we get an elaborate description about the concept of Hell and Heaven.
Good.
