คนส่วนมากคิดว่า มีภาระที่ต้องใช้ กริยา ที่ไม่ปกติ (irregular) จำนวนมาก

เช่นการใช้ go  ที่ส่วนใหญ่เห็นพ้องว่า ควรใช้ ‘we have gone to the store’

(หรือ we went) และจะไม่ใช้ว่า ‘we goed’

การใช้ คำต่อท้าย ed เพื่อทำเป็น past participles ไม่มีความยุ่งยาก

จนเมื่อต้องใช้กับ คำที่ยาว เช่นกับ คำ Cast

โดย Cast เป็น irregular verb โดยสะกดเช่นนี้เมื่อใช้เป็น past tense

คนส่วนใหญ่และ usage guides เห็นควรขยายไปที่ กริยา อื่นที่ประกอบด้วย cast

เช่น broadcast, forecast, and typecast.

หากแต่ยังใช้ -ed ลงท้ายเพื่อทำเป็น past กับคำเช่น
