ทั้ง ASSUME และ PRESUME เกี๋ยวข้องในความหมาย แต่แยกกันได้ เช่น
TO ASSUME หมายถึง “to take for granted”
หรือ “to infer without proof” เช่น
‘Mrs. Black assumed that her husband had paid the bill.’
‘Let us assumefor a moment that the plan succeeds.’
‘Don’t always assumethe worse.’
‘I had assumedhim to be a Belgian.’
TO PRESUME หมายถึง ‘to believe something to be a fact’
หรือ ‘to infer as true without actual proof to the contrary.’ เช่น
‘When Stanley came upon another explorer in the jungle,
เขามิได้กล่าวว่า “Dr. Livingstone, I assume”
หากแต่กล่าวว่า “Dr. Livingstone, I presume”
เพราะ สถานการณ์ บ่งชี้อย่างชัดเจน ว่า ชายคนที่เขา พบ จะเป็นคนอื่นไปไม่ได้
อย่างไรก็ตาม ในการสนทนา ตามธรรมดา อาจใช้ทั้งสองคำ แทนที่กันได้
