1 บอก ความรู้สึกเศร้าและผิดหวัง ของบางคน เกี่ยวกับบางสิ่งที่ได้เกิดขึ้น หรือบางสิ่งที่เขาได้กระทำ
‘Regret’ มีความเป็นทางการมากกว่า ‘be sorry’
คุณสามารถพูดว่า ‘you regret something’ หรือ ‘are sorry about it’

(NOAD) อธิบาย ความหมายที่ต่างกัน
ว่า Adj. regretful คือ รู้สึกหรือแสดง regret เช่น
She shook her head with a regretful smile.
และ Regrettable คือ ทำให้เกิด regret หรือที่ไม่พึงปรารถนา เช่น
The lost of job is regrettable.
เมื่อเป็น adv. ความหมายที่แตกต่างเปลี่ยนไป
เมื่อใช้ปกติ Regretfully หมายถึง in a regretful manner (ในลักษณะที่น่าเสียใจ)
She sighed regretfully.
แต่ยังสามารถใช้เป็น adv. ในประโยคให้หมายถึง it is regrettable that เช่น
Regretfully, the trustees must turn down your request.
ซึ่งเป็นการใช้ Regretfully ที่พ้องความหมายกับ regrettably.
เป็นการใช้ ที่นักอนุรักษ์ไม่เห็นด้วย แต่ความที่ใช้กันทั่วไป จึงถูกรวมไว้ใน dictionary สมัยใหม่หลายเล่ม

...ระวัง อย่าใช้ว่า “You are ‘sorry for’ something”...
That quote may be misquoted! ;-)
I hear a lot of "I am sorry for you." (meaning "I feel that you are 'pitiful' or 'in bad shape'..."). "I am sorry for your loss." is understood to have deep sympathy/emotion with 'you', more than "I am sorry about your loss."
