Had better & had rather

Had better เป็นคำที่ใช้กว้างขวาง ในการให้คำแนะนำ หรือออกคำข่มขู่อย่างอ่อน

We had better get started before midnight.

You had better apologize to me for that remark.

ในการใช้เช่นตัวอย่าง อาจใช้ วลี had best แทน had better ได้ด้วย

แต่ทั้งสองคำ ยังไม่ถูกต้องตรงความหมาย เท่ากับคำว่า should

Better had เช่นประโยค

You better had get here soon. เป็นการใช้แบบเฉพาะถิ่นหรือคนไร้การศึกษา

Had rather (และใช้ would rather ได้ด้วย) เป็นการระบุการอ้างอิง เช่น

I had rather (หรือ would rather) stay than go.

I’d rather you not tell him.

Hadn’t ought คำนี้เป็นสำนวนที่ไม่ใช่มาตรฐาน สำหรับ shouldn’t เช่น

You shouldn’t (ไม่ใช่ hadn’tought)do that.

Had ought เป็นคำของคน ด้อยการศึกษา เช่นเดียวกับคำ hadn’t ought

อย่าใช้คำนี้ ในความหมายของ should ในข้อความเช่น ‘You had ought to leave at once.’


Hamstring & hamstrung

Hamstring หมายถึง เส้นเอ็นเส้นหนึ่งอยู่ด้านหลังของเข่า

(ความหมายหนึ่งของ ham ที่ใช้กับส่วนของขาคนที่ด้านหลังของเข่า)

เมื่อเป็น กริยา hamstring หมายถึง ทำให้ทุพพลภาพ หรือทำให้พิการ ทำให้หมดพลัง

You are trying to hamstring my efforts on this job.

เมื่อเป็น past tense และ PP สะกดเป็น hamstrung หรือ hamstringed.

จากความคุ้นเคยกับคำหลัก string ที่ผันเป็น string, strung, strung

นักเขียนส่วนมากจึงเลือกใช้ hamstrung.
