ผมไปได้หนังสือ The College Solution. A Guide for Everyone Looking for the Right School at the Right Price. เขียนโดย Lynn O’Shaugnessy  http://www.thecollegesolution.com/   จากนิวยอร์คเมื่อวันที่ ๑๑ ก.ค. ๕๑   จึงเอามาแกะหานวัตกรรมอุดมศึกษาใน สรอ. เอามาเล่า    เรื่องแรกคือ มหาวิทยาลัยทำงาน (working college)


          ผมเข้าเว็บไซต์ของหนังสือเล่มนี้ พบว่าเขาสรุปสาระหลัก ๘ ข้อ   ผมติดใจข้อ ๔ มาก   จึงคัดลอกเอามาดังนี้ 
          “College rankings are flawed. There's no reason to rely heavily on U.S. News & World Report's flawed college rankings. Learn how to research academic majors, as well as evaluate individual departments within colleges and universities.”


          แต่ตอนที่ ๑ นี้จะแกะเรื่อง มหาวิทยาลัยทำงาน ซึ่งอยู่ที่หน้า ๑๙๑ – ๑๙๓   และที่เว็บไซต์ของ Work College Consortium www.workcolleges.org ระบุอุดมการณ์ของกลุ่มสถาบันไว้ดังนี้ 

          “On each campus, there has been a historical recognition of the value of work and an institutional commitment to promote an understanding of that value among students through establishment of a work program. These work programs help students to understand work as a tool for experiential education, as a means of serving the community, and as a place for integrating academic learning, practical knowledge, and life lived in the larger community. The colleges blend courses in liberal learning and applied studies with their own particular vision of the undergraduate curriculum.” 

          ผมขอเน้นคำว่า คุณค่าของการทำงาน นะครับ   เขามองเป็นการเรียนรู้บูรณาการ เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของการเรียนรู้เพื่อชีวิต

 

          “At work colleges, students are encouraged to reexamine the values of the larger society. All the work colleges stress the value of plain living. In this environment where work is a part of the educational experience along with academics, students and faculty can resist external pressure to view the world of higher education as an "ivory tower," out of touch with the real world. Rather, the world is here, and we are committed to the improvement of that world.”

 

ตัวอย่างของมหาวิทยาลัยทำงาน


▓ Berea College http://www.berea.edu/  ตั้งมากว่า ๑๕๐ ปี   ไม่เก็บค่าเล่าเรียน   และรับเด็กที่มีความสามารถสูง แต่ไม่มีทุนทรัพย์ที่จะจ่ายค่าเล่าเรียนได้    ย้ำว่า Berea เป็นมหาวิทยาลัยที่มีคุณภาพสูงมาก   นักศึกษาต้องทำงานอย่างน้อยสัปดาห์ละ ๑๐ ชั่วโมง   มหาวิทยาลัยเน้นการเรียนโดย (Deep) Learning, Labor & Service 

 
▓ College of the Ozarks  http://www.cofo.edu/   มีคำขวัญว่าเป็น “Hard work university”   และได้รับการจัดอันดับโดย US News & World Report ให้อยู่ในอันดับ top 20 ของ Liberal Arts College ใน Midwest   นศ. ใช้เวลาประมาณสัปดาห์ละ ๑๕ ชั่วโมงทำงาน   และสามารถได้รับทุนและค่าจ้างงานจนถือได้ว่าเรียนฟรี


▓ Alice Lloyd College   http://www.alc.edu/  เป็นมหาวิทยาลัยเอกชนด้าน Liberal Arts ที่เน้น Leadership   และอ้างว่าบัณฑิตที่จบ ออกไปโดยมีหนี้จากการกู้เงินเรียนต่ำมาก

 

▓ Blackburn College http://www.blackburn.edu/  

 

          ผมมองว่า ควรอย่างยิ่งที่จะต้องนำเอาหลักการและวิธีการ “มหาวิทยาลัยทำงาน” มาใช้ในบางมหาวิทยาลัยของไทย    โดยต้องเอาใจใส่ ๒ ข้อ
 

๑. ต้องสร้างบรรยากาศและวัฒนธรรมที่ยกย่องการทำงาน   งานเป็นสิ่งมีเกียรติ มีคุณค่า


๒. ต้องพัฒนาวิธีการทำให้การทำงานเป็นการเรียนรู้วิชาต่างๆ ที่เรียนหรือสอนนั้นเอง
