The purpose of our activity was to encourage and build a team of nurses in pediatric palliative care through the sharing of knowledge, opinions and experience.

Method: A group-meeting design was conducted at the Pediatric Unit of Srinagarind Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, Thailand. Purposive sampling among nurses having worked between 10 and 20 years was used to recruit 18 participants. All of the participants joined voluntarily from 4 pediatric wards, 2 surgical wards and one each from the Adult Cancer Ward, NICU, CCU, OPD and Day Chemotherapy. They call themselves the Community Of Practice On Pediatric Palliative Care. Knowledge management(KM, knowledge sharing, after action review and arranging knowledge assets)was used to create guidelines for nurses caring for a child with a terminal illness.

Results: July 13, 2007, we held our first two-hour open sharing session. The participants shared about ‘breakingbad news’, ‘how to care for a child and family holistically’ and ‘current practice in each unit (physical care, psychosocial and spiritual care)’,non-essential drugs’, ‘law and ethics regarding withdrawal/non-withdraw of the endotracheal tube/respirator’, ‘multidisciplinary team work’, ‘death concepts among children’, ‘communication skills’, ‘play activity’, and ‘non-pharmacological methodologies’.Each of these topics will be revisited to share further detail/learning at the next meeting November 26, 2007.

Summation: The results of the first sharing have proved beneficial to developing our practice. Our results are being extended at http://gotoknow.org/blog/pedpalliative
