เมื่อวันที่ 3 มิถุนายน 2564 Centrum voor Wetenschap-en Technologie Studies (CWTS) หรือ Centre for Science and Technology Studies แห่ง Leiden University ประเทศเนเธอร์แลนด์ ได้ประกาศผลการจัดอันดับมหาวิทยาลัยโลก ตามสมรรถนะทางวิชาการจากผลงานวิจัยในฐานข้อมูลสากล Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Database ประจำปี ค.ศ. 2021 ที่เรียกว่า CWTS Leiden Ranking 2021 ที่ https://www.leidenranking.com/ranking/2021/list
ในการดูอันดับมหาวิทยาลัยโลกโดย CWTS มีตัวชี้วัดที่สมควรทำความเข้าใจก่อน ดังนี้
