อธิบายว่าใช้ BRIEF โดยเฉพาะกับ “duration of time” เช่น
‘a brief stay in a hospital.’
และความหมายอื่นของ “brief” คือ
“concise” (สั้น) “curt” (ห้วน) และ “succinct” (กระชับ) เช่น
‘The chairman made a brief talk of only five minutes.’
สำหรับ SHORT ใช้ได้ทั้ง กับ “เวลา” และ “พื้นที่” เช่น
‘That was a short meeting.’
‘Joe is a short man.’
หากใช้ว่า “a brief distance” หรือ “a brief skirt” ถือว่า ไม่เป็นทางการ
เพราะเหตุว่าสามารถใช้ “short” ได้ในเกือบ ทุก สถานการณ์
แต่ควรใช้ “brief” แต่เพียงกับเหตุการณ์เกี่ยวข้องกับเวลาเท่านั้น

ใน British English หมายถึง “คำสั่งชุดหนึ่งให้แก่คนหนึ่ง เกี่ยวกับ งานหรือหน้าที่ ของเขา” เช่น

เมื่อใช้ทางกฎหมาย หมายถึง
“ข้อสรุปของ จุดต่างๆ ทั้งด้าน ‘facts and legal’
ในคดี ที่ให้แก่ ทนาย เพื่อต่อสู้ในศาล เช่น
‘He cannot be too highly recommended, if he is free and will take the brief.’
และใช้ไม่เป็นทางการ หมายถึง ‘a solicitor” หรือ ‘barrister’ (ทนาย)
ใน US English ใช้ “brief” หมายถึง
“ข้อเขียนในเรื่อง ‘facts and legal points’
ที่สนับสนุน คู่ความฝ่ายหนึ่ง ที่เสนอแก่ศาล”
I am confused by
สำหรับ SHORT ใช้ได้ทั้ง กับ “เวลา” และ “พื้นที่” เช่น - ‘That was a short meeting.’ - ‘Joe is a short man.’
I would like to have “พื้นที่” explained. (As ‘a short man’ is not a short “area”).
And incidentally we hear a lot of “a brief case” where ‘brief’ here is a noun for (important) ‘document’ and used as an adjective to qualify ‘a case’ (= a portable container). I think ‘brief case’ has the same meaning in all ‘English’.
