ภาษาอังกฤษ ไม่กำหนดมาตฐาน ถือตามส่วนใหญ่ที่ใช้แต่ละท้องถิ่น

ความหมาย อาจยืดหยุ่น ขึ้นอยู่กับ ตำแหน่ง/หน้าที่ ในประโยค

ให้รายการคำที่อาจสับสน กับ “fact”

รวมถึง “facts” “FAQs” “Fax”

โดย “facts” เป็นภาษาทางกฎหมาย หมายถึง

“เหตุการณ์/สถานการณ์ จริงหรือกล่าวอ้าง อันแตกต่าง จาก ผลที่เกิดตามกฎหมาย”

Dictionary of Problem Word and Expression:

ให้รายละเอียด “fact” ว่า

ไม่มีการใช้สำนวน “false fact”

ดังนั้น สำนวน “true fact” และ “true facts” ถือเป็นคำฟุ่มเฟือย

จึงอย่าใช้ว่า “The true facts are …...” ให้ตัด “true” ออก และ

เลือกใช้แทนวลี “loose facts” ด้วย “supposition” หรือ “allegation”

เป็นการใช้ ที่นำไปสู่ แนวคิดของ “incorrect facts”

ที่ทำให้นักวิจารณ์กระอักกระอ่วนใจ เมื่อพวกเขาเน้นย้ำว่า “that facts must be true.”

การใช้ สำนวน “the fact that”

เพื่ออ้างอิงถึงสถานการณ์ทั้งหมด โดยใช้เริ่มต้นวลี เช่น

“He tried to hide the fact that he was disappointed.”

“The fact that the centre is overcrowded is the main thing that people complain about.”

ข้อควรระวัง

ในวลีเช่นนี้ ต้องใช้ “that”

อย่าใช้ว่า 'He tried to hide the fact he was disappointed'

ใช้สำนวน “in fact”

เพื่อแสดงว่า “กำลังให้ข้อมูลรายละเอียดเพิ่มเกี่ยวกับสิ่งที่ได้กล่าวไว้” เช่น

“They've been having financial problems. In fact, they may have to close down.”

ให้คำแปล นาม “fact” คือ

“ความจริง” = (reality) หรือ ข้อเท็จจริง เช่่น

“It is a fact that smoking is a danger to health.”

เป็น คุณศัพท์ สะกด = “factual” แปลว่า “เกี่ยวกับข้อเท็จจริง” เช่น

“a factual account.”

สำนวน “the fact of life” = “ข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับ เพศศึกษา”

หรือ “as a matter of fact” หรือ “in fact” และ “in point of fact”

ต่างแปลว่า “แท้จริง หรือ อันที่จริง” เช่น

“She doesn’t like him much – in fact I think she hates him!”
