บางคนไม่เห็นด้วยกับการใช้เช่นนี้ ในการสนทนาและการเขียนเป็นทางการ
หากแต่ สามารถใช้ได้บ้าง โดยชอบให้ใช้ “ different from” มากกว่า
ใน American English ยังสามารถใช้ ‘one thing is “different than”’ ได้ด้วย
หากแต่ British English บ่อยครั้ง ถือว่า เป็นการใช้ไม่ถูกต้อง
เป็นไปได้ เมื่อใช้เป็นการ เปรียบเทียบ และมีวลี ขยายความต่อ เช่น
“I am no different than I was 50 years ago.”
เมื่อมีความแตกต่างอย่างมาก ระหว่างสองสิ่ง
สามารถกล่าวว่า ‘one thing is very different from the other.’ เช่น
“The firm is now very different from the way it was ten years ago.”
ข้อควรระวัง
อย่าใช้ว่า ‘one thing is “much different” from another.’
ถ้าหากสองสิ่ง คล้ายกันค่อนข้างมาก (quite similar)
สามารถใช้ว่า ‘one this is “not very different from” the other’ หรือ
“not much different from” the other เช่น
“I discovered that things were not very different from what I had seen in New York.”
“The new model is not much different from the old one.”
ถ้าหาก สองสิ่ง ‘are alike’
สามารถใช้ว่า ‘one thing is no different from the other’ เช่น
“He was no different from any other child his age.”

อย่าใช้ว่า ‘one thing is “not different” from another.
