Aim และ Intend
Dictionary of Problem Words and Expression
อธิบายว่า เมื่อใช้ “aim” ใน ความหมาย
“การจัดตำแหน่ง” (positioning) ต้องตามด้วย “at” เสมอ เช่น
“Don’t aim the gun at me.”
เมื่อใช้ “aim” ใน ความหมาย
“to intend” = ตั้งใจ มุ่งหมาย
หรือ “to try” = ทดสอบ พยายาม
อาจตามด้วย “at” เช่น
“I aim at your happiness “
หรือตามด้วย Infinitive “to” เช่น
“I aim to make you happy.”
ไม่ควรใช้ “aim” ตามด้วย “at” และ “gerund” (นาม มาจากกริยา + ‘-ing’)
หลีกเลี่ยง การพูดหรือเขียนว่า ”I aim at proving you wrong.”
ส่วน “intend” ออกเสียง เน้น พยางค์ หลัง หมายถึง
“to design” = ออกแบบ
หรือ “to have in mind” = คิดไว้ในใจ
ถือว่า “เหมาะสม” และ “สละสลวย” มากกว่า “aim”
อาจใช้ “intend” ตามด้วย Infinitive “to” เช่น
“I intend to ride with you.”
หรือตามด้วย “gerund” เช่น
“I intend riding with you.”
หรือตามด้วย วลี เช่น
“I intend that you follow me promptly.”
