It is a "cultural" thing.
I tried to make people (outside Thailand) read "Bangkok" as บางกอก (not แบงก็อก). I had no success! So people say what they want to say and it is upto us to make sense of what they say (in the way they say it).
I complained more (like calcium คาวลืเซียม - not แควเซียม; filter, file, sandfly,...), pronunciations of Thai words (like ขะ คะ - high+short vowel -> low; and vice versa),...
We don't follow logical enumeration but make exceptions for this and that; in the end we have a culture that is full of exceptions. We know when "equality - fair and just" is a matter of exception, what else?
Thanks nui : Good to hear that Bangkok is getting is getting its name บางกอก back.
Any channce of calling มะกรูด in English as "makrut lime"?
(Kaffir = 'darkie' in SA and is offensive too).
