Dear All, These days, I’ve always been on the road (and on the plane
!) to schools in provinces, assessing impacts on our schools and communities from sending American Fulbright grantees to teach English ka.
In addition to the invaluable learning and loads of hope, my trip to Ubon turned out to the extra special!
I met up with two of my students who went to see me at the Ubon airport. It was the first time to see them after about 34 years since I left school. It was my first and last time to be in the teaching profession. Though it was really brief of less than 2 years, my memories of the students are still so fresh and my passion in teaching still shines in my heart.
Both students are medical doctors in Ubon and Kalasin. The first who arrived earlier showed me pictures of his family as well as his parents and sisters. He also saved a group picture back to the time we had it taken in the school yearbook. We three talked about the past (naturally, considering our age ka!. Both said they didn’t have any question about their profession as it was sort of planned/directed by their parents.
We then discussed their kids’ studies and what they thought about their kids’ future. One simply asked, ‘Is it what your daughter wants to do?’
Looking back to this short get-together, here are what I thought ka:
- Thanks to our Thai culture! Students are considered students in the best sense as we never use the term, ‘my former student’….the bonds are there forever, along with teachers’ good intention and kind thoughts while students retain their respect.
- We value our family ties deeply. The feeling of gratitude is in our DNAs, still!
- Our kids’ future is no longer ‘our design’ ka.
The world has changed and the way we bring up our kids has to be different in some aspects but the core values of our Thai culture need to stay on with a proper balance to today’s and tomorrow’s contexts lae ka.
Life is a journey jing jing and my brief journey as a teacher was a true beauty and will stay true till the end of my life ka!
