10 - Again, we often say more (PSE)

Do we know any words that we use to say more about 'verbs'? Adverbs!

10 - Again, we often say more (PSE)

Last time we looked at words that are not nouns (not names for objects, or names for people and animals or names for plants).

We looked at words that we use to say more about nouns. For examples:

  She has a large jug.

  That tree is tall.

We call these words "adjectives" and we use them to say more about objects (nouns).

We can use two words (from 'adjectives' box) or more to say more about objects. For examples:

I have a small brown dog.

I am fat, ugly and old.

Do we know any words that we use to say more about 'verbs'? What do we call these words? Should we have a box for them?

The words we use to say more about what we do usually say "how" we do (act) or "how something happens". For examples:

   Say this 'again'.

   I go shopping 'often'.

   We 'rarely' drink tea.

   You sing 'clearly' and 'beautifully'.

She 'always' goes 'through' things 'thouroughly'.

We can go back to the beginning and read about the words we use to say more about things and the words we use to say more about how we do something. Please do it again and again until you see what I mean.

[Dear Teachers,

We have words for 'nouns' and words (we call 'adjectives') to say more about 'nouns'. We have words for 'verbs' and words (we call 'adverbs') to say more about 'verbs'.

We can see how we 'construct' simple English from 'nouns' and 'verbs' then we add words from 'adjectives' to say more about 'nouns' and we add words from 'adverbs' to say more about 'verbs'.

For 'adjectives' we have simple 2 ways:

   1) adjective noun ...

   2) noun 'is' adjective.

For 'adverbs' we may use an adverb before or after a verb:

"She always loves him." and "He loves her always."               are both correct and meaningful.

"Again, he walks back." and "He walks back, again."             both are correct and both mean the same.

We will keep this problem about adverbs in mind and continue with Plain and Simple English (PSE). We will come back to adverbs and how we use adverbs to say more about other things -- not just verbs -- later.

Another way to say more about things is to use 'nouns' words as 'adjectives' words. For examples:

a water tank = a tank for keeping water

tank water = water from a tank

city people = people who live in a city

a people city = a city good for people

a rice paddy = a paddy (wet field) for growing rice

paddy rice = rice from a paddy

We could ask: Why 'Ice cubes', 'sugar cubes' and 'moth balls' make more sense than 'cube ice', 'cube sugar' and 'ball moths'?]
