ในเนื้อหาผมกล่าวถึงว่า ผมได้มีโอกาสพูดคุยกับคณบดีของ College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Seoul National University ถึงศักยภาพระดับโลกของ CALS และผมก็ไม่แปลกใจเลยว่าทำไม CALS ถึงได้มีศักยภาพสูงอยู่ TOP 10 ของโลกได้ เพราะเขามีหน่วยงานภายในชื่อ National Instrumentation Center for Environmental Management ซึ่งรวบรวมเครื่องมือไฮเทคราคาสูงอยู่ในนี้เกือบทั้งหมดครับ

Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy Lab
This laboratory is equipped with various microscopes and accessories for observing? internal structure of biological specimens. Confocal laser scanning microscope systems can be used for studies on fine structure of cells or tissues, trace of Ca2+ and Mg2+, and 3-D image reconstruction. The image restoration microscope can support cell biological research using techniques such as FRET, FRAP under diverse wavelength conditions. Histological research can be supported by light microscopy and specimen-sectioning equipments. Laser capture microdissection supports molecular biological research with cell isolation techniques.

Also, nanobiological research can be supported by scanning probe microscopy through in-liquid imaging and physicochemical analysis. Micrographs can be processed and analyzed in digital formats.

Chromatography Lab
There are several ion chromatographs for isolating anion, cation, carbohydrates, or organic acid components. And there is HPLC for analysis components by detecting absorbance in UV/Vis or fluorescence. GC is also equipped to analysis gas phase of metabolites.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer Lab
This laboratory is equipped with a 600MHz NMR spectrometer, one of the best in Korea, Which is used to characterize physico-chemical properties and to identify structures of a wide range of liquid samples from organic molecules to bio-macromolecules. A 400MHz NMR spectrometer with CP/MAS and mico-imaging supports studies on morphological and physico-chemical properties of solid samples.

They are used for controlling environmental conditions on plant growth, and for measuring biological responses of plants and animals to environmental conditions, too. Some equipments are available to borrow for use in the field.

X-Ray Structure Analysis Lab
This laboratory is equipped with various X-ray instruments for structure analysis. X-ray diffraction method is one of the most powerful tools to investigate structural features of various materials such as proteins, powders, and fibers at the atomic level. A cryogenic system, a dual processor, and softwares such as SOLVE and O were installed to support crystallography of proteins and nucleic acids in the era of post-genome.
