ยามที่อากาศดี ท้องฟ้าปลอดโปร่ง อาจจะมีเมฆสวยๆ แบบนี้ให้ได้ชื่นใจ

เรียกว่า เมฆหางม้า ครับ

แปลจาก mare's tails (mare = ม้าตัวเมีย)

ส่วนนักอุตุฯ ท่านเรียกด้วยภาษาละตินว่า Cirrus uncinus

เมฆชนิดนี้อยู่สูงครับ ราวๆ 7 กิโลเมตรขึ้นไป

อากาศบนนั้นก็เย็นจัดถึง -40 หรือ -50 องศาเซลเซียสเชียว

คำว่า อังซินัส (uncinus) เป็นชื่อชนิด (species) ของเมฆซีร์รัส ซึ่งหนังสือ International Cloud Atlas Vol.I ให้นิยามไว้ว่า (หน้า 18)

Uncinus

         Cirrus often shaped like a comma, terminating at the top in the hook, or in a tuft the upper part of which is not in the form of a rounded protuberance

 

ในหนังสือ The Cloudspotter's Guide คุณ Gavin Pretor-Pinney เขียนไว้ว่า (หน้า 175)

"The species commonly referred to as 'mare's tails', and officially called Cirrus uncinus, is when the streaks are shaped like commas or hooks.  The top of each comma is thicker than the tail but, even on careful inspection, does not show any clumps or mounds on its upper side."
