World Health Organization (WHO) says heatwaves are very dangerous weather events, usually happen in summers. They can cause dehydration, blood clots and heatstrokes among people and wildlife. They have devastating effects on crops and plants. They can lead to wildfires and droughts.
Heatwaves are (very) high pressure cells, where air is pushed downward over warm air on the ground causing heat domes that act like lenses which heat up the ground and the air inside the domes up - hotter, at times even at night.
Heatwaves are more frequent and more severe as there is more carbon dioxide (CO₂). When CO₂ builds up in the atmosphere. it traps heat like a blanket, causing hotter and larger areas on Earth (or the whole Earth - the largest heatwave in the world).
El niño is like a large-area of weather dome where heat is trapped and circulating over a longer period. The effects are much the same but take longer time. (‘Los niños’ is the plural of ‘el niño’, in Spanish.)
World Meteorological Organization (WMO): more than 60,000 people died in the European heatwave of 2022. Young people, Elderly, and those with health issues are vulnerable because they find it harder to keep their core body temperature to 37-38C (when outside temperature is higher).
The same effects are on plants and animals creating food security and survival problems. Wildfires and droughts also raise the severity of effects. Social problems such as fighting for survivor (beg, steal, hoard and profiteer on foods and shelters, …) can be expected to increase.
A stop-gap solution is Shelter box - a cooler place with foods and water where people can take refuge temporary (to recover from heat effects). Medical conditions should also be resolved there.
What is a solution for Thailand?
It is not too late for politicians and academics to start working on possible solutions now.
