ดาวมฤตยู - ย้ายราศี 7 ปีมีครั้งเดียว

There are a lot of ‘hypes’ about Uranus (ดาวมฤตยู) coming into ‘your’ zodiac and (according to various ‘horoscopes’ and 'astrological predictions') you can expect big change in your life.

Let us look at Uranus and what known facts about this peculiar planet. First, where is Uranus?

The image shows a view of 1/7/2565 04:30hr eastern sky at Bang Pa-in Ayuddhaya Thailand. Uranus is somewhere in the middle of the line from Venus (down the bottom) and Jupiter (up the top). We can only see it with a telescope (as a faint blue spot).

Actually, if we look at the Royal Society dictionary

And on the Net for examples https://nineplanets.org/kids/uranus/  and https://theplanets.org/uranus/

Uranus has a radius of 25.362 km and a diameter of 51.118 km. It is the third-largest planet in the Solar System and the biggest of the ice giants. And

  1. William Herschel, the discoverer of Uranus (1781CE), first believed that the planet was a comet. However, years later it was confirmed to be a planet.
  2. The original name proposed for Uranus was Georgian Sidus – which means Georgian Planet, in honor of King George II, however, the scientific community didn’t agree. In a way, we are thankful for that even now.
  3. The (27) Uranian moons are named for characters created by Alexander Pope and William Shakespeare. The biggest moons of Uranus, all of them, have surface areas smaller than the continent of Australia. Umbriel, one of the biggest moons of Uranus, has a very dark surface. It consists mainly of ice and only a fraction of rock.
  4. The 13 (known) rings of Uranus are thought to have formed around 600 million years ago from the collision of moons or other big celestial objects. The rings of Uranus are unique since they are dark and extremely narrow.
  5. The intensity of (sun)light on Uranus is about 1/400 of that on Earth. --Being 2.87 billion km from the Sun --compare to 93M km for Earth).
  6. Like Venus, Uranus rotates east to west. Uranus has a very unusual axial tilt (98 degrees - almost horizontal compare to 22.5 degrees for Earth). Many believe that this was caused by a collision with an Earth-sized planet. Uranus rotates on its axis once every 17 hours and 14 minutes. It takes 84 Earth days to orbit the Sun.
  7. Uranus is the lightest out of all the four gas giants.
  8. Uranus is the coldest planet in the solar system with surface temperature at -224°C
  9. The Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft to have flown by Uranus.

Uranus is the first planet discovered in modern history. The planet was too dim to be seen by ancient civilizations and as such it remained hidden in the darkness of the sky. --So we have to give credit to ancient (Indian?) astrologers to have noted its existence (and even its effects on our lives). **In good conditions, Uranus can be seen with binoculars.

…Uranus’ axis is tilted almost 98°, which effectively means that Uranus rotates on its side (lying - poles along the orbit around the Sun). The result of this is that Uranus’ north pole points at the Sun for half of its year, while the south pole points at the Sun the other half of its year! In other words, it is daytime on one Uranian hemispheres, while it is night time on the other for 42 Earth years at a time. Furthermore, due to this extreme rotation, Uranus does not have days like on other planets—that is, the Sun doesn’t rise and set like on other planets.

Venus and Uranus are the only 2 planets in the Solar system that rotate from ‘East to West’ (Earth and others rotate from ‘West to East’). ** East to West means the Sun rises in the West or on the left hand side when we look toward the North Pole, and sets in the East (the right hand side).

Let us have a look at Thai perspectives on Uranus:

(If you are inclined to follow your ‘stars’, you would have already known about the ‘futures’.)

[Edited 5 July 2565 to add English names for some Zodiacs – ราศีพฤษภ Taurus ราศีพิจิก Scorpio ราศีเมษ Aries ราศีตุล Libra, more can be found on the Net. We do not see any of these 4 zodiacs anywhere near Uranus in the picture above. So any relationships of Uranus (too far from us to see) and the (above) constellations (many light years away in the background) are not of very very feeble gravity. Perhaps, modern astrologers use powerful telescopes in their craft now.]
