Strain & sprain

imply a wrenching, twisting, and stretchingof muscles and tendons.

To strain is to stretch tightly, make taut, wrench, tear,

cause injury to, by long-continued or sudden

and too violent effort or movement:

to strain one's heart by overexertion, one's eyes by reading small print.

To sprain is to strain excessively(but without dislocation)

by a sudden twist or wrench,

the tendons and muscles connected with a joint,

especially those of the ankle or wrist:

to sprain an ankle.

Strain (strān)

A group of organisms of the same species,

sharing certain characteristics not typical of the entire species

but minor enough not to warrant classification

as a separate breed or variety: a drug-resistant strain of bacteri.

The extent to which a body is distorted

when it is subjected to a deforming force, such as stress.

The distortion can involve both a change in shape and in size.

In elastic strain the distorted body returns to its original shape and size

when the force is removed.

In plastic strain the distorted body does not return to its original shape

and size even after the force has been removed.

A sprain is a painful wrenchingor tearing of the ligaments of a joint,

such as an ankle or wrist.

It may result from a strain, a more general term

that implies misuse, overuse, or overexertion.

That is, a strain is a stretchingor forcing beyond proper limits:

“Because he strained ligaments when he landed, he sprained his ankle.”
