กิจการสื่อสารมวลชนในประเทศไทยเกิดขึ้นมานานแล้ว โดยแบ่งการเจริญก้าวหน้าออกเป็น 3 สาย ได้แก่สิ่งพิมพ์ การภาพยนตร์ และวิทยุกระจายเสียงและวิทยุโทรทัศน์กิจการทั้งสามใช้เวลานับสิบปีกว่าจะเป็นที่รู้จักและนิยมของประชาชน และผลจากความเจริญก้าวหน้านั้นทำให้เกิดงานและอาชีพของนักสื่อสารโดยตรง และส่งผลโดยอ้อมต่อระบบการศึกษา การเรียนรู้ทางการเมือง สังคม และวัฒนธรรม การเปลี่ยนแปลงเหล่านี้เกิดขึ้นอย่างช้าๆ ซึ่งประชาชนไทยและสังคมโดยรวมมีโอกาสเรียนรู้และปรับตัวได้ทัน แต่เมื่อวิทยาการด้านคอมพิวเตอร์เกิดขึ้นและเจริญก้าวหน้า จนประดิษฐ์เครื่องมือแปลงสัญญาณวิทยุเป็นสัญญาณแสงกระพริบได้สำเร็จและครอบคลุมการสื่อสารทั่วโลกกิจการสื่อสารมวลชนในประเทศไทยจึงเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างใหญ่หลวง กลายเป็นระบบสื่อสารและเผยแพร่สัญญาณผ่านเครือข่ายอินเทอร์เน็ต (Internet) การเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างทรงพลังเช่นนี้ นำพาสังคมไทยเข้าสู่ยุคการสื่อสารมวลชนแบบใหม่อย่างรวดเร็วทุกระนาบ ได้แก่ วิทยาการ เครื่องมือ อุปกรณ์ เทคโนโลยี การตลาด การบริหารจัดการและการประยุกต์ใช้ แต่ประชาชนและสังคมไทยส่วนใหญ่ยังตามไม่ทัน คนไทยยังไม่สามารถผลิตนวัตกรรมของตนเองได้ จึงเป็นเรื่องน่าวิตกว่า ความเจริญอย่างยิ่งยวดนี้จะกลายเป็นกับดักให้คนไทยติดบ่วง กลายเป็นทาสความเจริญแบบใหม่ที่ไม่สามารถมีอิสระในการกำหนดความเจริญใดๆ อย่างที่ตนเองต้องการได้

 

Mass communications in Thailand - publishing, film and broadcasting has long history. Each system took a decade to permeate into Thai society and to open up people’s eyes of its benefit. The development of mass communication systems directly created mass communication and related jobs. This development also indirectly has impact on education, politics, social and culture. When the world succeeded in inventing computer and created coding system equipment, it enabled to switch radio signal to digital signal and interchange. This has enhanced a big effect for all Thai mass  communication systems. The interchanging signal has provided a new communication channel network, which is able to convert all previous systems of media to a new one called internet. This system brings Thai people and society to new era of high speed and convergence of mass communication. The fast and high power of internet provides a big change to Thai mass media and society, in many levels of users, such as new technology, equipment, device, management or any application. However, Thai people didn’t own any part of these. Thus, this powerful new media may finally cause suffering to Thai society, unless, the Thai could become a technological producer and fully control their own communication system.
