เกณฑ์ในการพิจารณาจัดอันดับองค์กรวิจัยระดับโลกใน SIR 2017 ประกอบด้วย 12 ตัวชี้วัด จำแนกได้เป็น 4 ด้าน คือ ด้านการวิจัย (Research) 50%, ด้านนวัตกรรม (Innovation) 30% และด้านผลกระทบต่อสังคม (Societal Impact) 20%

เมื่อวันที่ 25 กรกฎาคม 2560 มีการเผยแพร่ผลการจัดอันดับองค์กรที่มีผลงานวิจัยระดับโลก ประจำปี ค.ศ. 2017 ที่เรียกว่า SCImago Institutions Rankings 2017 (เรียกย่อว่า SIR 2017) ที่ http://www.scimagoir.com/rankings.php?sector=all

                  ใน SIR 2017 มีองค์กรที่มีผลงานวิจัยทั่วโลก 5250 แห่ง ได้รับการจัดอันดับ โดย 2966 แห่งเป็นมหาวิทยาลัย/สถาบันอุดมศึกษา นอกนั้นเป็นองค์กรอื่นๆ ได้แก่สถาบันวิจัย โรงพยาบาล และศูนย์วิจัยต่างๆ ปรากฏผลที่น่าสนใจดังต่อไปนี้

Singapore : มี 27 องค์กรได้รับการจัดอันดับอยู่ในช่วง 32-653 ของโลก โดย 5 อันดับแรก คือ 32 National University of Singapore; 48 Nanyang Technological University; 94  Agency for Science, Technology and Research Singapore; 171 Institute of Bioengineering & Nanotechnology; 273 Genome Institute of Singapore

                  องค์กรวิจัยที่เป็นสถาบันอุดมศึกษาของไทยส่วนใหญ่อันดับดีขึ้นกว่าปีที่ผ่านมา ยกเว้น 5 สถาบันที่อันดับแย่ลง คือ KU (560=>567), KMUTT (538=>573), MFU (574=>592), AIT (610=>624), และ MSU (632=>649) โดย BU ได้รับการจัดอันดับเป็นครั้งแรกในปีนี้ ส่วนองค์กรอื่นๆที่มิใช่สถาบันอุดมศึกษา 7 แห่ง มีอันดับดีขึ้นในปีนี้เพียง 2 แห่ง คือ MPH (603=>565) และ Ramathibodi Hospital (653=>637)
