I think absent is used in the sense of 'not be there' when expected or called for duty.
That is we don't say 'Jo was absent from the beach' but 'Jo was not on the beach'. Unless Jo was a surf lifeguard and he was assigned to perform his duty on the beach at that time. ;-)
