(AHD) อธิบาย การใช้ “about” ตามดั้งเดิม

อ้างถึง ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง

“เรื่องที่เล่า” (narrative) กับ “หัวข้อนั้น” (subject) เช่น

‘A book about Cezanne.’

‘A movie about the Boston Massacre.’

การใช้ต่อมา ขยายเกิน “narrative” ไป อ้างอิงถึง

ความสัมพันธ์ หลายแบบ ของ “นาม และ สิ่งต่อเนื่องที่ตามมา” เช่น

‘The party was mostly about showing off their new offices.’

‘You don’t understand what the woman’s movement is about.’

การใช้แบบนี้ น่าจะถือกำเนิด จากวลี “all about” ที่คุ้นเคย เช่น

“Let me tell you all about her.”

สามารถใช้ คำเหล่านี้ เป็น บุพบท เช่น

‘I’ve been walking around Moscow.’

‘I spent a couple of hours driving round Richmond.’

‘He looked about the room but couldn’t see her.’

ผู้ใช้ American English ปกติ เลือกใช้ “around”

แทนที่ “round” หรือ “about” เมื่อใช้ในความหมายนี้

เมื่อ “สิ่งหนึ่ง “is around” หรือ “round” อีกสิ่งหนึ่ง”

หมายถึง “มันจะอยู่ รอบสิ่งนั้น ในทุกด้าน”

ในความหมายนี้ จะเป็นการใช้ เป็น บุพบท

และไม่อาจใช้ “about”ได้ ในความหมายนี้ เช่น

‘She was wearing a scarf round her head.’

‘He had a towel wrapped around his head.’
