Dear All,
I visited the Higher Education Fair Friday afternoon and walked to
visit almost all the booths to see how our universities were doing.
On the whole, I think the idea of organizing such a huge event is
excellent as it opens up higher education not only to prospective
and current students, but also to parents and other stakeholders
who need to know what universities have been doing, how well
they've performed, and what can be expected out of higher
education institutions.
While I was walking around the university booths, I was happy to
see that universities took it seriously to join in this Fair. Many
booths were real striking with their students giving presentations,
leading games, etc....great way to encourage students to have more
hands-on experiences and teamwork na ka.
Well! only after a short while did I start to think more seriously
about the ways we promote 'education' and 'learning'. I feel
that our Thai world of education could be misled with
fancy-presentation focuses...much much more than creative ways to
stimulate visitors' enthusiasm to learn what's going on and how
the kids can learn to think more about studies, and the
future.
Marketing strategies seemed to overrule the true meaning of
education. I couldn't agree more that attractive designs of
booths, lively presentations, and bright and nice small gift items
like bright colored bags and pens, helped draw visitors' attention
but I hope that each university could do better than that.
Otherwise, students are always used to the sanuk part which's been
well blended in our culture.
It was wonderful to see some of senior ajarns, especially several
private ones and a handful of provincial universities, actively
give advice or answer queries. More could be done too.
Universities are where great brains meet!! I would wish to see more
learning forums organized within each booth....some sessions of
more than just fact giving ones...e.g. meeting the President/ Vice
President/ Dean, etc....to learn of the university's direction and
strengths; forums of alumni to share what they've learned and how
they've looked back to see what was worth their time and energy;
forums of current students and lecturers to share their views on
how learning has changed, etc.
The innovation section which truly boasted the strengths of our
universities couldn't catch that much attention. Every booth was
filled with knowledge and thinking behind each of the creative
inventions and products created. It was a pity, though, that this
section was very quiet. Hope it happened to be the slowest time of
the day.
Guess my points of sharing with you today are that I really wish to
see more involvement of senior administrators in this type of
recruitment and learning process, and to see a more knowledge and
experience sharing event rather than facts and fun! The notion of
'sanuk' could be integrated into these seemingly serious sessions
too. Otherwise, our kids always look for sanuk first in everything
they do without learning that much jing jing na ka. Besides, the
innovation section was an excellent place for students to think
more and learn faster....strategic thinking and actions of all the
organizers and universities to make best use of this section would
be useful.
Sounds like an 80-year-old lady mai ka? Sorry if I get too 'in'
na ka.
Before I end this note, let me share with you another nice site
we've just got ka. It's great for many of you who might be
involved in English teaching and literature, who might wish to
encourage self-learning of kids, who may love to create a bit more
English language environment ka. The website URL is
www.RepeatAfterUs.com which is an award-winning online library and
language labs of copyright-free classics with audio clips. Try na
ka....you can make a real good use of it ka.
Any view to be shared from you all would be lovely ka.
Cheers.
