เมื่อสองวันที่แล่วคุยกับเพื่อนที่โตมาที่นิวยอร์คแต่ มาเรียนโทที่แคนาดาแล้วก็ตัดสินใจหางานอยู่แคนาดาต่อเลย ทั้งๆที่ที่นี่เงินเดือนน้อยกว่า ภาษีรายได้ก็เก็บเยอะ 

เค้าบอกว่าแคนาดาน่าอยู่กว่า โดยเฉพาะกับคนที่ย้ายถิ่นฐานมาจากประเทศอื่น

แล้วเพื่อนก็บอกว่าที่แคนาดานี้มีแนวความคิดแบบ cultural mosaic

วันนี้มาเปิด wikipedia เล่นๆดูก็พบว่าใน wiki เขียนคำนิยามไว้ว่า

"Cultural mosaic is a term used to describe the lives of ethnic groups, languages and cultures that co-exist within Canadian multiculturalism, differently from others system like the melting pot, which is often used to describe the neighboring United States' ideal of assimilation." society. คือการใช้ชีวิตอยู่ร่วมกันในสังคมแคนาดาที่ประกอบไปด้วย ผู้คนที่มาจากหลากหลายชาติพันธุ์หลากหลายวัฒนธรรม

เป็นการส่งเสริมอุดมการณ์สร้างความนิยมวัฒนธรรมที่หลากหลายหรือพหุวัฒนธรรม ซึ่งเป็นอุดมการณ์ที่แตกต่างกับนโยบายของอเมริกาประเทศเพื่อนบ้านที่ส่งเสริม แนวความคิดแบบเบ้าหลอมอันเป็นวิธีของอุดมการณ์ที่ทำให้ประชาชนทุกคน ในสังคมเหมือนหรือคล้ายกัน (จับใส่หม้อคนๆให้กลายเป็นเนื้อเดียวกัน)

  • ในอเมริกาถ้าคุณย้ายมาจากประเทศอื่น คุณต้องกลายเป็นอเมริกัน รักชาติแบบที่รัฐตีกรอบไว้ให้
  • ส่วนในแคนาดา ทุกคนยังคงรักษาวัฒนธรรมเดิมของตน แต่ต้องมีขันติธรรม (tolerance) ต่อวัฒนธรรมอื่น ในขณะเดียวกันทุกคนก็ช่วยกันพัฒนาอัตลักษณ์ความเป็นแคนาดาด้วยกัน

ผู้อพยพ (immigrant) ที่จะเปลี่ยนสถานะเป็นประชากรแคนาดาเต็มตัวต้องเข้าพิธี (citizenship ceremony) ต้องกล่าวคำปฏิญาณและร้องเพลงชาติ แปลกแต่จริงที่เค้าไม่ลืมรากตัวเองแต่ก็พัฒนาความรักชาติแบบ mosaic นี้ได้อย่างกลมกลืน
