I have tried and tested a blood pressure wrist watch and found what you have found “.. I looked up the principle of pulse oximetry (used in the wrist watch) and found (eg. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S095461111300053X ) that there are a number of factors affecting ‘accuracy’ (compared to traditional devices): for examples: response to light at specific wavelengths (the 2 light pulsing leds under the watch), algorithm used in computing the values, and the ‘condition of blood and blood vessel’.
Pulse oximetry has been found useful (‘accurate’) in use on children in a study. (Does this mean their blood and blood vessels give better response than our aged blood vessels?). The algorithms are very much statistical (average based x samples of responses in about 10 seconds), and being studied intensively - so as new and improved technologies are going, we can expect ‘more consistent’ measurements. (Updates and upgrades of pulse oximeters can be done ‘on air’ like phones and tablets, make a lot of complaints and wait for new firmware versions ;-).
I see potential as cheap and useful health/patient monitoring device for use at home and in hospital. With a little more processor memory, and more weather-proof design, healthcare and services can be much improved and costs lower for both patients, health providers and taxpayers. (Many good research and development for universities, businesses and investors can piggy back on FOSS materials - look up GitHub to get started.)
