การใช้ BID คือ การเสนอ ที่จะ ชำระเงิน

ถ้า “bid for” บางสิ่ง ที่นำมาขาย หมายถึง

“offer to pay เงินจำนวนหนึ่ง ให้แก่ของสิ่งนั้น”

เมื่อใช้ “bid” ในความหมายนี้

รูป past และ past participle คือ “bid” เช่น

‘He bid a quarter of a million pounds for the portrait.’

การใช้ BID ในการ กล่าว ‘greetings’ และ ‘farewells’

ผู้คน เคยใช้ BID ในการ ต้อนรับด้วยคำ good day และ การ farewell

ปัจจุบัน มีปรากฏแต่ใน หนังสืออ่านเล่นบางเล่ม

เมื่อใช้แบบนี้ ต้องเป็น past tense ด้วยคำรูป BID หรือ BADE

และรูป past participle ใช้รูป BID หรือ BIDDENเช่น

‘The old woman brought him his coffee and shyly bidhim goodbye.’

‘We bade Nandron a goodbye which was not returned.

‘Tom had bid her a good evening.’

‘We had bidden them good night.’

ในการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษ สมัยใหม่ ส่วนมากใช้ SAY แทน bid”

ในประโยคเช่น ‘I said good evening to them.’

‘Gertrude had already had her supper and had said good night to Guy.’

อย่างไรก็ดี เมื่อใช้ “say” ให้ใช้ “indirect object” ตามหลัง “direct object”

อย่าใช้ว่า “I said them good evening.”
