เมื่อวันที่ 26 กันยายน 2560 World Economic Forum (WEF) ได้เผยแพร่รายงานความสามารถในการแข่งขันของประเทศต่างๆทั่วโลก 137 ประเทศ ประจำปี ค.ศ. 2017-2018 ที่เรียกว่า The Global Competitiveness Report 2017-2018 ที่ https://www.weforum.org/reports/the-global-competitiveness-report-2017-2018

                  WEF ได้ใช้ดัชนี Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) เป็นดัชนีจัดอันดับความสามารถในการแข่งขันของประเทศต่างๆ โดย GCI ได้มาจากตัวชี้วัด 12 ด้าน (pillars) เป็นเกณฑ์พิจารณา ซึ่งประกอบด้วย 1) Institutions 2) Infrastructure 3) Macroeconomic Environment 4) Health and primary education 5) Higher Education and training 6) Goods market efficiency 7) Labor market efficiency 8) Financial market development 9) Technological readiness 10) Market size 11)Business sophistication 12) Innovation โดย Pillars 1-4 จัดเป็น Basic requirements subindex, Pillars 5-10 เป็น Efficiency enhancers subindex และ Pillars 11-12 เป็น Innovation and sophistication factors subindex

                  สำหรับอันดับความสามารถในการแข่งขันตามรายงานประจำปี ค.ศ. 2017-2018 (พร้อม GCI Score เต็ม 7.0) ที่น่าสนใจ เป็นดังต่อไปนี้

World Top 10: 1 Switzerland (5.86), 2 United States (5.85), 3 Singapore (5.71), 4 Netherlands (5.66), 5 Germany (5.65), 6 Hong Kong SAR (5.53), 7 Sweden (5.52), 8 United Kingdom (5.51), 9 Japan (5.49), 10 Finland (5.49)

Asia Top 10: 3 Singapore (5.71), 6 Hong Kong SAR (5.53), 9 Japan (5.49), 15 Taiwan, China (5.33), 16 Israel (5.31), 17 United Arab Emirates (5.30), 23 Malaysia (5.17), 25 Qatar (5.11), 26 Korea, Rep. (5.07), 27 China (5.00)

ASEAN Countries: ประเทศในภูมิภาคอาเซียน*ส่วนใหญ่ได้รับการจัดอันดับในครั้งนี้ดีขึ้นเมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับปี 2016-2017 ดังต่อไปนี้

                                    อันดับที่ดีที่สุดของประเทศไทยคือ 3rd Pillar (Macroeconomic environment) ได้อันดับ 9 ด้วยคะแนน 6.2 ประกอบด้วยตัวชี้วัด 1) Government budget balance, 2) Gross national savings, 3) Inflation, 4) Government debt และ 5) Country credit rating ในขณะที่อันดับต่ำสุดคือ 4th Pillar (Health and primary education) ได้อันดับ 90 ด้วยคะแนน 5.5 ประกอบด้วยตัวชี้วัด 1) Malaria incidence, 2) Business impact of malaria, 3) Tuberculosis incidence, 4) Business impact of tuberculosis, 5) HIV prevalence, 6) Business impact of HIV/AIDS, 7) Infant mortality, 8) Quality of primary education และ 9) Primary education enrolment rate  สำหรับด้านการศึกษาอุดมศึกษาและการฝึกอบรม (Higher education and training – 5th Pillar) ประเทศไทยได้อันดับ 57 ด้วยคะแนน 4.6 ในขณะที่สิงคโปร์ได้อันดับ 1 ของโลกในด้านนี้ด้วยคะแนนสูงถึง 6.3 จากคะแนนเต็ม 7.0
