การฆ่าตัวตาย เป็น การแสดงความอับจนพ่ายแพ้หมดหนทางแก้ไข หมดทางออกอย่างอื่น สิ้นหนทางแล้ว
เมื่อฆ่าตัวก็เป็นการทำลายตัว เมื่อทำลายตัวก็เป็นการทำลายประโยชน์ทุกอย่างที่พึงได้ในชีวิต
ในบางกลุ่มบางหมู่เห็นว่าการฆ่าตัวตายในบางกรณีเป็นเกียรติสูง
แต่ทางพระพุทธศาสนาแสดงว่าเป็นโมฆกรรม คือกรรมที่เปล่าประโยชน์ เรียกผู้ทำว่า คนเปล่า เท่ากับว่าตายเปล่าๆ
ควรจะอยู่ทำอะไรให้เกิดประโยชน์ต่อไปได้ ก็หมดโอกาส
