อธิบายความหมาย “axiom” ว่า
“เป็นกฎ/หลักการ อันเป็นที่ยอมรับเป็นสากล”
หรือ “ความจริงที่มีหลักฐานในตัวเอง” เช่น

‘The old axiom that you can only succeed through hard work.’
ส่วน “adage” หมายถึง
“ข้อความ ที่ได้รับความเชื่อถือ”
จากการที่ใช้มานาน และ ยอมรับโดยทั่วไป เช่น
‘It never rains but it pours.’
‘It is always darkest before the dawn.’
‘Good things come in small packages.’
และ “proverb” เป็น “คำกล่าวขนาดสั้น”
ปกติ ไม่ทราบที่มา หากแต่แสดง “ความคิด ที่เป็นประโยชน์”
หรือ “ความจริง ที่ทราบทั่วไป” เช่น
‘A rolling stone gathers no moss.’
‘A stitch in time save nine.’

คำที่ใช้ทั่วไป “saying” ให้ความหมายครอบคลุมถึง
ความหมายของ คำกล่าวข้างต้น ทั้งหมด และยังรวมถึง
คำอื่นๆ ที่หมายถึง “คำกล่าว สั้นๆ แสดง สติปัญญาหรือ ความจริง”
aphorism = คำพังเพย
เป็น คำสั้นๆ ของความจริง หรือ หลักการ
แสดงความลึกซึ้งของเนื้อหา และรูปแบบที่แตกต่าง เช่น
‘Few writers have coined more aphorisms than Benjamin Franklin.’
apothegm = คติพจน์ (ออกเสียง “AP-uh-them”)
epigram = คำคม เป็น “ข้อความบทกวี สั้น น่าจดจำ เข้าใจง่าย”
maxim = คติบท หรือ ข้อเขียนที่เป็นความจริง หรือ ‘rule of conduct’ เช่น
‘For a wise man, he seemed to me … to be governed too much by general maxims.’
motto = ภาษิต/คำขวัญ คือ ข้อความสั้น
ใช้แสดง หลักการ เป้าหมาย หรือ ‘ideal’ เช่น
“‘Exuberance over taste!’ is my motto.”
saw = บ่อยครั้ง อ้างถึง คำพูดที่คุ้นเคย จนซ้ำซาก เห็นบ่อยมาก เช่น
‘old saw that gave little comfort to the losing team.’
saying = สุภาษิต คือ บางสิ่ง ที่นำมากล่าวอยู่เสมอ เช่น
‘a collection of philosophical saying.’
