"sample" has a more definite meaning in Statistics that is not the same as "example".
I hear people say "for example" and " for instance" quite often to mean "(case) example". And 'this instance (or case) is a good example' may be very confusing when contrasted with 'thsi example is a good instance (or case)' ;-)
