Good dialogue is constructed. It does not mirror real-life speech but distills the speaker's meaning and enhances the reader's understanding.

Dialogue needs to do one of two things-and ideally do both at once. It needs to reveal character and move the narrative forward.

Dialogue is not the simply conversation; it is a way of using conversation to drive narrative action, intensify conflict, or establish character-all of which will have consequences.
