What I hear about Thailand rice production:
-- output per area is lower (than Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam, India,...)
-- cost of production per ton is higher
-- growers' profit margin is low but resellers' profit margin is high
-- many varying factors are not under control so risk is very high
...
You are right about farmers first.
#1 in rice export but last in farmers' livelihood does not sound good.
It must have been 'true Thai tradition' that keep Thailand's rice farmers growing year after year.
Soon they will lose out to mechanised/automated farming technologies and agri-companies (from overseas).
[We want to help. But we can't buy direct from farmers.
-- we need a home-electricity or hand-operated rice mill (does anyone know of such rice mill?)
-- we need to measure chemical residues in rice (does anyone know how to do this?)
-- we don't have Internet rice shops (does anyone know of paddy rice shops?)
...]
I agree with you something. and for your question. I think the government should have a better answer.
Thank you very much for you opinion.
