  SPORTS  HERO

          “Sports Hero” has just come into existence recently.  It is the name of a sport project organized by Sport Development Committee in each province excluding Bangkok, with an aim to seek the best grassroots players to represent Thai youths in international tournaments.

          These youths, under 18 years old, are not national players, but the Sports Authority of Thailand or Kor Kor Thor orders Provincial Sport Development Committee to send all these “new faces” to participate in international arenas to gain experience, to build up their energy and to get rid of stage fright.

          The Sport Hero project had already sent the first group of selected grassroots player to compete in the Arafura Games 2011 in Darwin, Australia. Believe it or not, the Thai youths collected 7 gold medals, 2 silvers and 1 bronze. Even the Australian host committee were amazed at these sport heroes’ excellence.

          The young players from different provinces in the Sport Hero project, 35 of them, will be sent to the world’s sport stage to increase their experience and power so that they will be fully confident when they join in the 27^th  National Youth Games in Uttaradit province.

          In addition, three international sport programs they will take part in very soon are 1) ASEAN Athletic Youth Championships in Indonesia;  2) Swimming SEAge Group 2011 in Vietnam; and 3) Toyota Polish Junior AWJGS Event 2011 in Poland.

          Mr.Kanokphan Julakasem, the big boss of Sport Authority of Thailand, says, “I want these sports heroes to prove their own ability at higher level. To encounter pressure overseas will reinforce their endurance.  In Thailand, these youths attend training sessions regularly through statistical records of sport performances with full use of Sports Science.  Since they are well prepared, they can bring medals from these three tournaments.

          Actually, all 35 grassroots players are “young stars,” Grade-A level from different provinces, having gone through selection by sport experts and sport associations / clubs related to these youths’ kinds of sport : athletics, swimming and golf.

          All of them are paid monthly allowance at 3,250 baht.  For those who will reach 18 years of age or over can because eligible to play in the Asian Games and Olympic Games with higher monthly allowance.

          The path of success in participating in those upcoming international games must lie in these individual players’ guts.  These young stars are expected to bring honour to their provinces, sport associations / clubs and families.

 คำอธิบายศัพท์และสำนวนที่ควรรู้

    1. grassroots (อ่าน กราสรูทสฺ คนอเมริกันอ่าน  แกรสรูทสฺ) ในบทใช้เป็นคุณศัพท์ ขยายนาม players หมายถึง “ผู้เล่นระดับรากหญ้า” ในที่นี้คือ นักกีฬาที่มาจากต่างจังหวัด หัวเมืองชนบทมีหญ้าขึ้นเขียวขจี น่าดูน่าชมไม่น้อยทีเดียว

     2.represent (อ่าน เรพ-พริ-เซ้นทฺ) คำกริยา ท่านเคยพบคำนี้มาก่อนแล้ว แต่ขอนำเสนอใหม่ เพราะคำนามของคำนี้ คือ representative(s) แปลว่า “ส.ส.” ควรเลือกตัวแทน(ผู้แทน)ที่กินใจท่าน ในบทนักกีฬาระดับรากหญ้าเป็นตัวแทนเยาวชนไทยที่จะไปแข่งขันต่างประเทศ

     3.arena(s) (อ่าน  อะ-รี-เนอะ) แปลว่า “สถานที่จัดการแข่งขันกีฬา” เช่น สนามกีฬากลาง  คอร์ท(แบดฯ,บาสฯ,เทนนิส, วอลเล่ย์ฯ เป็นต้น) สระว่ายน้ำ ฯลฯ  คณะกรรมการพัฒนากีฬาของจังหวัดส่งเยาวชน “หน้าใหม่”(new faces) เข้าร่วมแข่งขัน ณ สถานแข่งขันดังกล่าว

      4.stage fright (อ่าน สเตจ ไฟร้ท) คำนามประสมระหว่าง stage (เวที) กับ fright(ความหวาดกลัว) ในที่นี้คือ “อาการของนักกีฬาหน้าใหม่ที่ตื่นเวทีหรือตื่นสังเวียนการแข่งขันโดยเฉพาะระดับนานาชาติ ความหมายทั่วไปของคำประสมนี้ คือ ตื่นเวที เพราะต้องออกมาโชว์เดี่ยว เช่น การกล่าวสุนทรพจน์(speech) การโต้วาที (debate) หรือ พรีเซ้นต์ (present)งานหน้าชั้นเรียน

      5.amazed (อ่าน อะ-เมซดฺ) กริยาช่อง 3 ใช้เป็นคุณศัพท์(ตามหลัง were) คำง่ายๆคือ very much surprised(เซอร์ไพร๊ซมั่กๆ) คณะกรรมการจัดการแข่งขันกีฬาของออสเตรเลียงุนงง(แต่ประทับใจ)เหตุใดเยาวชนหน้าใหม่ของไทยโกย 7 เหรียญทอง 2 เงินและ 1ทองแดง หันกลับมาบ้านเฮาบ้างดีกว่า ช่วยกันโปรโมท(promote) Amazing Isan (ออนซอนอีสาน) กันหน่อย

      6.Authority (อ่าน  โอ-ธอ-ริ-ที) ใช้กับรัฐวิสาหกิจ(State enterprises) ภาษาไทยใช้คำว่า“การ-”เช่น การกีฬาแห่งประเทศไทย(Sports Authority of Thailand) การท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทย(Port Authority of Thailand) เป็นต้น  การไฟฟ้าฝ่ายผลิตแห่งประเทศไทย (EGAT เขียนคำเต็มให้ดูซิครับ)

  7.encounter(อ่าน อิน-เค้านฺ-เทอ)คำกริยาแปลว่า“พบ”(meet)และ“ได้ประสบการณ์” (experience) ในบทสปอร์ตฮีโร่(Sport hero)จะต้องพบหรือเผชิญกับแรงกดดันในการแข่งขันกีฬา ณ ต่างประเทศ แต่เป็นสิ่งที่ดีที่จะช่วยเสริมสร้าง (reinforce)ความอดทนบึกบึนของนักกีฬาเอง

       8. statistical records (อ่าน สเต-ทิส-ทิ-คัล เร็ค-คอรฺด คนอเมริกันอ่าน เร็ค-เคิรฺด) หมายถึง การบันทึกเป็นสถิติ ดูความก้าวหน้า(progress)ของนักกีฬา เช่น วันก่อนวิ่ง 100 เมตร ใช้เวลา 18 วินาที วันนี้ใช้เวลา 15 วินาที พรุ่งนี้คงใช้เพียง 12 วินาที ท่านคงคุ้นเคยกับบันทึกสถิติของการแข่งขันกีฬาทั่วโลก หนังสือชื่อ Guiness Book of World Records

      9.related (อ่าน ริ-เลท-ทิด) กริยาช่อง 3 ใช้เป็นคุณศัพท์ ตามด้วยบุพบท to แปลว่า “เกี่ยวข้องกับ” ในบทสปอร์ทฮีโรทั้ง 35 คน ผ่านการคัดเลือกจากผู้เชี่ยวชาญและสโมสรกีฬาของจังหวัดที่เกี่ยวข้องกับประเภทกีฬาของเยาวชนดังกล่าว

     10.guts (อ่าน กัทสฺ) คำอธิบาย คือ  the will and courage to do something difficult (ความตั้งใจและความเด็ดเดี่ยวที่จะทำอะไรที่ยากๆให้สำเร็จ) คนไทยนิยมใช้คำว่า “กึ๋น” ดังนั้น หนทางความสำเร็จของสปอร์ทฮีโร ขึ้นอยู่กับกึ๋นของแต่ละคน ตัวใครตัวมันละครับ
