Sport Management
By... Assistant Professor Dr.Kriengsak Kisawadkorn
This Sport English column seems to be a serious topic because it deals mostly with management. About this issue, the world’s sport management such as the Fédération Internationale de Football (FIFA), the International Olympic Commission (IOC) and the World University Games (Universiade) may come into your mind.
As football (or soccer) becomes the world’s No.1 sport in terms of popularity_this means that the biggest number of people around the world play it and cheer on it as football fans. Are you one of the players or one of the fans, Dear Reader?
The greatest success of football nowadays comes from the management of FIFA_the name is in French (Fédération Internationale de Football) because FIFA originated at the Roland-Garros stadium in Paris, France, The World Cup represents the world’s football. It is organized every four years like the Olympic Games, but surprisingly, they never meet in the same year!
Although the Olympic Games may not be as popular as the World Cup, more than 40 types of sports/games are contested including football. You might already know that the Olympic Games existed before the World Cup_they might be as old as the name of Mount Olympus in Greece, from which they got the name : Olympus_Olympic.
If you are interested in the World Cup and the Olympic Games, you should know the years and the countries of when and where the upcoming World Cup and Olympic Games take place. Unfortunately, Thailand is out of the question for this matter!
Let’s touch on football because of its popularity. These names are world-famous even if the play in Europe : English Premier League, Real Madrid, La Liga, etc. The management of these leagues is well done in every category_ample budget, good discipline among players and manager-coach. The Manchester United Football Club (Man U) is an excellent example of achievement thanks to the superb management, and the greatest honour must go to Sir Alexander Ferguson (Fergie).
The Thai Premier League now exists on Thai soil with many clubs having their province/city names such as Bangkok Glass, Pattaya United, Buriram PEA, Muangthong Nongchok United and T-Rex Khon Kaen. The competitions or matches among Thai Premier League teams are nearly as exciting as English Premier League teams. Have you ever watched our Thai teams playing against one another, live on TV?
In not so long a time when the Thai National Football Team whose players come from different Thai Premier League teams can go to the World Cup. Let’s get our fingers crossed for this rare opportunity!
Before ending this column, the columnist would like to say something about KKU’s sport management since he works for this campus. The Sport Development Committee used to play a big role in sport management, but it does not exist anymore. This Committee consisted of Sport Section chief, Sport Cup advisors and Student Union representatives. They had regular meeting with an aim to manage sport activities on campus and off campus (University Games), also to select High School students in the “White Elephant” project to study free at KKU. This sport management brought success to the University’s sport arena when KKU players won several medals in the Games.
The disappearance of the Sport Development Committee is really a pity to the present sport management which has to struggle hard for the satisfaction of all concerned. One day, this Committee might return and work for the success of the sport people here.
