INTERATING ICT INTO LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TEACHING

Traditional face-to-face learning can be defined as a process which runs ingiven time, space – we usually speak of a classroom - and within a specificgroup of learners. Together with their teacher – the class manager – thelearners try to reach their aims within the accepted syllabus. While teachingin the class we have many advantages at our disposal – we can have the immediatefeedback and see when we lose the attention of the learners, whichactivity is interesting for them and which is boring and should be, thereforecut as soon as possible. We are aware of the activity of learners and can seehow their potential is being used and developed.

TELL, however, brings an open learning environment. It allows learners to jointhe courses which would otherwise remain unreachable for them. The natureof the tasks allows them to work on the tasks when they feel ready for it notwhen the teacher wants them to do so.

The culture of the classroom you are used to from face-to-face teaching gainsnew features since the learners themselves might not even meet each otherduring the course. Even though the student-student or teacher-student communicationmode is necessary even in TELL, it will be of a different nature. Itis, therefore, important for the teacher and the course designer to set up thetasks for learners in such a way that we can be sure – even without face-tofacecontact – the learners will:

-organize their study to meet given deadlines
- cooperate with other course participants to avoid the feeling of separation
-demonstrate their responsibility for learning by carrying out specific
-tasks on their own
-make informed decisions
-provide autonomous analysis of given issues
-demonstrate they have mastered certain knowledge
-apply their knowledge on a practical task or assignment

The most common worry of teachers who are used to a face-to-face teachingenvironment is that learners in TELL can misuse the situation in which theyare not under the control of the teacher. Indeed you might come across suchsituations, especially in cases when TELL courses are integrated into traditionalschool environment the learners might search for shortcuts. However, inadult education usually people who opt for this kind of education do this voluntarily,on the basis of self-investment and we therefore must rely on theirbest intentions to participate in the course.
