The present thesis is entitled, “Analytical Study of Karma, Hell And Heaven in Buddhism.” I must clarify that Buddhism is a vast area and I have chosen only “Theravada Buddhism” for the purpose of my study. This topic is of my great interest because in my country i.e., Thailand, Theravada Buddhism is lived in practice. Therefore, I had a feeling from the beginning of my study to give a serious thought over an important issue which is directly related with human life.
We find that human life is viewed from many angles and in philosophy this becomes a crucial problem because philosophy and religion do not take life as it appears. In philosophy and religion, life means wherefrom I and where to ? That is, it is a question of the origin and development of life, the purpose and the aim of life.
With this view in my mind I have looked into the problems of life. To me, it seems that human being, in the world are faced with a lot of problems. It is the problem related with the birth, age, several kinds of sufferings and there are many economic and social problems. These days mankind is faced with the problems of War, terrorism and many other problems making life miserable.
I have divided the whole thesis into six chapters excluding conclusion. In the first chapter I have started with the question i.e. what is Karma in Theravada Buddhist philosophy ? It deals with the meaning of Karma and its laws related with Hell and Heaven.
According to Buddhism there are four faiths or beliefs or confidences :
. belief in Karma or confidence in accordance with the law of action.
. belief in the consequences of action.
. belief in individual ownership of action.
. belief in Enlightenment of the Buddha.
As far as the subject of Hell and Heaven is concerned, Hell is a place, where people with evil actions in this world, live. It can be also a mental experience of people, or in another words we can say that Hell exists in the mind of human beings. In Tripitaka we get an elaborate description about the concept of Hell and Heaven.
In the second chapter I discuss the different question like, what is life ? And how does it progress ? What is after this life ? and so on and so forth. The result of the good and bad actions decide the life after our death. The rebirth takes place according to the actions that we do in our life here and now.
In this regard we can put our hope on the five group of existence : Panca-Khandha : which means the joint of life. This five group of existence to be the structure of all animals. We get enough materials about it from Tripitaka and other Buddhist literature that discuss about the topic. We get more inspirations from the character of mind ( Jitta, Jetasik, Rupa and Nibbhana ), in the Buddhist philosophy to reflect for to see the life, how it is going on according to the Law of Nature ?
Paticcasamupada that is to say : to see the beginning of life which everybody wants to be born and die and to show the place of re-birth, the progress of birth. According to Lord Buddha in indaka sutta there are five points in each, such as:
- Kalala which means the embryo in the first week after conception.
- Abbuda which means the character of flesh and viscuous (condensed).
- Pesi which means a piece of flesh or meat.
- Ghana which is a character of a chunk (a mass) to become hard to set strong.
- Pancasakha : which means the character of five knobs of the head.
After that the developments of the body takes place such as hair, fingernails, etc. About all these we get enough informations from the different literatures which is written about it. Finally, the Buddhist philosophy gives the needs of human being and to give the aim of life and the matter for how to reach the top of life.
The third chapter throws light on Theravada Buddhism which is the oldest form of Buddhism. Accordihg to it, actins of persons are governed by his cetana. The Karma can be divided by its means, i.e. good or bad. The cetana and result of actions, the Law of Nature is the another way to study of comparative study of Karma.
The fourth chapter explains the beginnings of life. The birth and the way to Hell. Here I have discussed the question : What is Heaven ? I have described the location of Heaven and Hell also.
The fifth chapter explains the concept of Karma in the contemporary Buddhist Literature. I have also suggested that there is need to correct these misunderstanding. For example, some people say that this doctrine leads towards inaction ; but I find in Buddhism that it is a religion which does not accept a creator or Super Reality. It believes in the ability of man which can develop and purify human mind. All misunderstanding goes off when we understand the correct meaning of Karma as stated
in the literature.
From the analytical study we are able to have facts which will help us to remove our misunderstanding in the subject of meaning, and also to remove the misunderstanding in the view point.
In the sixth chapter I try to find an analytical study of Hell and Heaven in light of Theravada Buddhism. The view of life in this world is also discussed here. We get many view points about the existence of Hell and Heaven. In this regard it is good to examine two points, whether the view that Hell and Heaven really exist in the character in the mind ( namadhamma ) but in the same way it will show that “no” about the Hell and Heaven to be place of Rupadhamma.
Another view that is prevalent is that both Hell and Heaven is both in character are being in way of mind ( namadhamma ) and in the place ( rupadhamma ).
In the Conclusion we have a reflection on the life of Lord Buddha who is the origin of Buddhism. All the doctrines of Lord Buddha is full of cause and reason, which can provide us with the enough information which will clarify our many doubts.
In brief, I can only say that Hell and Hell and Heaven is the place where people go after their death according to their actions in this world.
Here also we find the view that Hell and Heaven is also the conception of mind. Both Hell and Heaven is within a man. If he has a happy experience or if he feels happy then we say he is in Heaven.
On the other hand is suffering and if he is experience very miseable in this life then we can say he is in Hell. Thus, it appears to me that Buddhism provides a scientific explanation regarding the origin of man, his deeds and his destiny.
