Swasdee ka, everyone. I gave you all a little break last week after having written four messages in a row ngai ka!
Yesterday, Ajarn Mor+ Vicharn called a meeting for us to reflect on the results of the World Conference on Higher Education (WCHE) and identify what to do next. I was more than happy to participate in this meeting ka.
It seems that 'social/societal responsibility' is the 'pra-ek' ka. The coverage is larger with the must for higher education institutions to remind them and increase in their awareness of the 'duties' they have been assigned from the public (not just exist to exist...meaning that to make money to survive well but hurt the society ngai ka!...my own sharp tongue ka, sorry na ka, academic services they must offer, and the closer interactions they need with their stakeholders from parents to employers. All must be woven into one whole picture, or otherwise, it could be just what we've seen day in and day out ka....bits and pieces here and there ka!
The role of students in having an active share in voicing their views, expectations and concerns was raised at WCHE and emphasized yesterday too ka. We tend to think of 'the best' and give 'the best' to our younger ones out of our good intention but it could be so limited from our own perspectives which might not be that practical anymore, especiallly for challenges our kids are facing today and will do in the future.
Well! having said that, the meeting stressed the importance of 'rights' and 'duties' at the same time to ensure that kids know what is in this package with the rights they'll get too ka.
I thought of a TQA assessor's brother who didn't perform well academically. In our Thai education system, we don't really have a support system for this group of students. His brother was lucky to be sent to study in a community college in the US. There, he found out that his own passion was in photography. Since then, he was happily studying along the line and was admitted to one of the top three universities in this area. He also didn't care much at all about a diploma, noting that his skills in taking pictures are evident when a diploma couldn't really tell about it ka.
Nice story with so many lessons to get out of it na ka....parents' understanding and support, our country's lack of proper guidance and counseling, our fixed mindsets on educational tracks (must go from primary to secondary to higher ed...if not 'smart enough', go to vocational school), inability to offer 'wichakarn' with practical skills, 'branding' of our students using their academic performances, wrong sense of diplomas, openness of community colleges in the US, etc.
Warm regards.
