มาเรียนรู้สุภาษิตจากโคลง

คัดจากหนังสือ โลกนีติสุตวัฑฒนนีติ ซึ่ง ราชบัณฑิตยสถานจัดทำเพื่อทูลเกล้าฯถวายพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช  เนื่องในวโรกาสฉลองสิริราชสมบัติครบ 50 ปี

     
One should keep company with good people and associate with them. Having understood
their virtue, he would become better and would never deteriiorate.
 พึงคบหาสมาคมกับคนดี พึงสร้างสัมพันธไมตรีกับคนดี เพราะรู้สัทธรรมของคนดีแล้ว ย่อมมีแต่จะดีขึ้นไม่เลวลง

 Avoid association with the wicked, asscociate with the virtuous, do good day and night,and always remember impermanence of all things.
จงเลิกคลุกคลีกับคนชั่ว จงคบหาสมาคมกับคนดี จงทำความดีทั้งกลางวันและกลางคืน จงนึกถึงความไม่เที่ยงอยู่ตลอดเวลา

 Just as ripe figs, although looking healthily red on the outside, are naturally full of worms inside, even so are the hearts of the wicked.
 ธรรมดาว่า ผลมะเดื่อเมื่อสุกแล้ว ภายนอกดูแดงสดใส (แต่) ภายในคลาคล่ำด้วยแมลงหวี่ ฉันใด ใจของคนชั่วก็ฉันนั้น

 Just as ripe jackfruits, although thorny on the outside, are naturally full of ambrosially sweet flesh, even so are the hearts of the virtuous.
ธรรมดาว่า ขนุนเมื่อสุกแล้ว ภายนอกจะเต็มด้วยหนาม (แต่) ภายในมีรสหวานปานน้ำอมฤต ฉันใด ใจของคนดี ก็ฉันนั้น

The sandalwood, though dry, does not part with its fragrance; an elephant, though in a battle field, does not abandon its grace; the sugar-cane, though crushed in a pressing machine, does not lose its sweetness; a wise man, though under distress, does not give up Dharma.
ไม้จันทน์ แม้แห้ง ก็ไม่ทิ้งกลิ่น  ช้าง แม้เข้าสู่สนามรบ ก็ไม่ทิ้งท่าทางอันสง่างาม   อ้อย แม้อยู่ในเครื่องหีบ ก็ไม่ทิ้งรสหวาน บัณฑิต แม้มีทุกข์ ก็ไม่ทิ้งธรรม

A lion, though hungry, never eats leaves and the like; and even when emaciated, never eats the flesh of a snake.
ธรรมดาว่า ราชสีห์ แม้จะหิว ก็ไม่ยอมกินใบไม้ ใบหญ้าเป็นต้น แม้จะผอมโซ ก็ไม่ยอมกินเนื้องู

One born of a noble family and will brought up, though fallen into trouble, would not do evil.
ผู้ที่เกิดมาเป็นลูกผู้ดีมีตระกูล ได้รับการอบรมรักษาจากวงศ์ตระกูลเป็นอย่างดี แม้ตนเองจะตกทุกข์ได้ยาก ก็ไม่ทำกรรมชั่ว

In the world, sandal paste is pleasantly cool, cooler is moonlight; far cooler than sandal paste and moonlight is the well-uttered discourse of the righteous.
ในโลกนี้ ผงไม้จันทน์นับว่าเย็น แต่ยังเย็นสู้แสงจันทน์ไม่ได้ ทั้งผงไม้จันทน์ และแสงจันทน์นับว่าเย็นแล้ว แต่ยังเย็นสู้คำสุภาษิตของคนดีไม่ได้

Should the sun rise in the west, Mount Sumeru bend its peak, the hell-fire become cool, and a water-lily grow on a mountain top, the words of the virtuous, however, will never change.
แม้พระอาทิตย์อาจขึ้นทางทิศตะวันตกได้ แม้ขุนเขาพระสุเมรุอาจน้อมยอดลงได้ แม้ไฟนรกอาจกลับเย็นได้  และแม้ดอกบัวอาจาขึ้นบนยอดเขาได้ แต่วาจาของคนดีจะไม่มีการแปรเปลี่ยน ไม่ว่าในเวลาใดๆ

Pleasant is the shade of a tree, more pleasant is that of relatives, mother and father; still more is that of preceptors and kings. Even more so is that of preceptors and kings. Even more so is that of the Buddha.
ร่มเงาของต้นไม้ย่อมอำนวยความสุขให้ได้ ร่มเงาของญาติย่อมอำนวยความสุขให้ได้ยิ่งกว่า ร่มเงาของต้นไม้ ร่มเงาของบิดามารดาย่อมอำนวยความสุขให้ได้ยิ่งกว่าร่มเงาของญาติ ร่มเงาของอาจารย์และพระราชา ย่อมอำนวยความสุขให้ได้ยิ่งกว่าร่มเงาของบิดามารดา ร่มเงาของพระพุทธเจ้าย่อมอำนวยความสุขให้ได้ยิ่งกว่าร่มเงา ทั้งมวล  

For one who is indolent how can there be proficiency. For one without proficiency how can there be wealth. For one without wealth how can there be friends.
For one without friends how can there be happiness. For one without happiness how can there be merit. For one without merit how can one attain Nibbana.
คนเกียจคร้านจะหาศิลปวิทยาได้ที่ไหน    คนไม่มีศิลปวิทยาจะหาทรัพย์ได้อย่างไร    คนไม่มีทรัพย์จะหาเพื่อนได้จากที่ไหน   คนไม่มีเพื่อนจะหาความสุขได้อย่างไร     คนไม่มีความสุขจะหาบุญกุศลได้จากที่ไหน    คนไม่มีบุญกุศลจะบรรลุนิพพานได้อย่างไร

There is no wealth comparable to knowledge,  for the latter can never be taken away by thieves.  Knowledge is a friend in this world and the source of happiness in the next.
ไม่มีทรัพย์ใดเสมอด้วยศิลปวิทยา   (เพราะ)ศิลปวิยาโจรลักขโมยไปไม่ได้    ศิลปวิยาเป็นมิตรในโลกนี้   ทั้งยังจะก่อให้เกิดความสุขในโลกหน้าอีกด้วย

One should not regard knoledge as being little.   He should retain in his mind what he learns.  Knowledge,gradually accumulated, would finally  become full,like ant-hills and drops of water.
ไม่พึงดูหมิ่นวิชาความรู้ว่าน้อย    พึงกำหนดจดจำ ความรู้ที่ได้ยินได้ฟังมาแล้วให้ขึ้นใจ    วิชาความรู้ที่ค่อยๆสั่งสมไว้นานเข้าจะเต็มบริบูรณ์    ดุจดังจอมปลวกและหยดน้ำฉะนั้น

One should neither regard art not science as being little.  Knowledge, even one, learnt to perfection, can be used as means of livelihood.
ไม่พึงดูหมิ่นวิชาความรู้หรือศิลปวิทยาว่าน้อย วิชาความรู้หรือศิลปวิทยาแม้อย่างเดียว หากแตกฉาน ก็สามารถใช้เลี้ยงชีวิตได้

There is no gem in everya rock, nor pearl in every elephant; no sandal-wood in every forest, nor wise man in every place.
แก้วมณีหาได้มีในภูเขาทุกลูกไม่  คดมุกดาหาได้มีในช้างทุกตัวไม่ ไม้จันทร์หาได้มีในป่าทุกป่าไม่ บัณฑิตหาได้มีในที่ทุกสถานไม่

If it be known where a truly wise man stays, one in search of knowledge should eagerly go there.
หากทราบว่า นักปราชญ์ผู้เพียบพร้อมด้วยวิชาความรู้ มีอยู่ ณ ที่ใด ผู้แสวงหาความรู้ก็ควรบากบั่นไปหาให้ถึง ณ ที่นั้น
