Learning from ⭕️ to Slow Release Remedy

2 Leaf nests built by caterpillars --a pattern in Nature

Concepts:

Baader Meinhof phenomenon
trackers learn to notice signs of ... then able to see the track made, once a sign or a pattern is learned, other signs too become visible and the skill becomes naturalized – that is a learner becomes an expert.

Slow Release medicine
in pharmaceutical drugs - coating active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) with certain nontoxic and inert substances (like chitin, pectin, or biodegradable polymers - acrylics that can delay dissolving of the drugs (so that some become active at certain rate as time goes by - so that patients do not have to take drugs frequently).

Pattern - a soft power tool

[From Royal Institute Dictionary (Th-Th): แบบ น.

Pattern: the repetition of specific models such as a visual design, a normal way to do something or a perceptual structure of forms. Patterns can be used to create balance, organize objects in space-time in a consistent manner, or create contrast. In modern terms, pattern is understood as  code of practice, best practice or standard.

The above concepts give rise to an approach for learning skills that are based on pattern recognition. To learn patterns that once noticed, can easily see the pattern more prevalent and able to learn more from more and different samples of the pattern, and perhaps able to learn skills to recognize other patterns too. We may argue that this is learning by copying (past or historic) patterns. But patterns are essence or abstractions or principles or theories of structures or processes or both in various domains or fields of applications.

One conceptual pattern may be classified as 'problem-solving'. This is the same as the famous 'if (condition) then (do)' pattern and its more lengthy cousin 'if (cond 1)-then (do A) else if (cond 2) then (do B)...' pattern that is a finite chain of 'if-then's  used in expert-type reasoning. The chain must be finitely long because infinitely long chain means we may not reach a tail-end 'do' or make an action. (That is we would spend all our time checking conditions but unable to do anything.)

In applications, learners learn a problem and the condition causing it, then learn to select from among possible options a solution that solves the problem. These patterns are then chained into 'cause-effect-remedy'. The remedy may or may not restore to the original [system] state before, but allow the system to continue in satisfactory altered [system] state after. (This is merely a rewording of the goal of the PISA test.)

So, what are we talking about?

We are back to ⭕️ on what skills (not topics nor subjects) we should learn. Pattern recognition is our major skill. We can say learning to speak is to learn the skill to recognize what we hear (utterances; the chains of 'words') and what we understand (the words to mean). To learn to read is to recognize the patterns of what we see (the chain of symbols, characters or letters) and what we understand (the graphics to mean). To learn to write is to learn to reproduce the patterns of graphic symbols for the intended meaning. Because there are common conventions (again patterns that are acceptable in society), these conventions (patterns) should be learned and used to enable common understanding within society.

We can continue on fitting topics and subjects into patterns. But it is more important and urgent to learn 'how to recognize patterns' (for the first time then let the Baader Meinhof effect grow) and how to enhance this skill, so that different patterns and more complex patterns (of patterns) are recognized.

Let us take a look at 'ariya sacca 4'  (as a problem-solving pattern)
if we have a dukkha (ทุกข์)
then we find the cause of dukkha,
if we have identified the cause and its cause (สมุทัย)
then we set a target for dukkha-free
if we have a goal (นิโรธ)
then we go about actions to reach our dukkha-free state (from dukkha state) (มรรค)

Now if we have a problem (important at work, serious at home, with friends,...),
can we replace 'dukkha' with 'problem' in the pattern above and solve the problem?

What if we replace 'dukkha' with 'flooding'? We then realize that the pattern or the strategy is the same but the result is failure after failure. Why? We would argue that there are failures in analyses (to determine the cause of flooding) or failures in actions to achieve flood-free state. So we have to look for patterns for use to get the analyses or the actions 'failure-free'. Can we use the problem-solving pattern above for these 'failures'? The answer would be yes! But in applying the pattern to solve problems in applying the same pattern, we can run into a so-called 'self-similarity' patterns (call it 'Fractal' if you like) repeatedly down the scale until we reach an 'elementary or indivisible unit' that makes no sense to continue.

Yes! Surely we can recursively do that and learn about sub-patterns till we find a pattern that is decidable or proven to be error-free, then we would apply the proven pattern and work our way up to the starting pattern problem. Mathematically, it would be possible and logical. But Mathematics and sciences like religions are based on assumptions of truth (honesty) in all processes. One error or one lie in the long chain of patterns can break the 'rightness' of the whole. Human processes are always based on truth, facts, logics or laws. There are degrees of truth and several degree of lie. There are human obscure characters, psychologies, emotional expressions that cannot be measured or patterned 'exactly'. That is there is no clear 'if (condition) then (do)' pattern to follow.

What should we do then?

There are different approaches like Fuzzy Logic, machine learning and quantum computing . Whoa! Stop here! I want to get off this tour bus. I only want to learn 'patterns', Not any of these fancy out of my world stuff. You are right. Shall we make a u-turn here and head down the hill?

So, now look at how we learn anything.

First kind: with our senses: what we can read about, we imagine what it is like or let it pass by. What we can hear we sometimes remember and think more about it. What we can see happening we can remember more about it (the view from where we look). We can copy more after we see how. What we do ourselves, we think more and learn more. We also have to put in an extra ingredient 'grit' - the will to complete the job the best we can. This is learning from 'template patterns'. In a way this is 'teacher-learner' mode. It is mostly what we are told to learn.

Second kind: with our thinking/imagining/scheming/.../adapting through what we can do to reach our goal. We can follow a framework (pattern) in devising our pattern and prove our pattern by building a model or a working example. This is learning from 'guiding patterns'. In other words, this is 'project-based learning'. This can take us from our wish to the boundary of knowledge and beyond. It is very much our wish and will to learn - with some support.

Third kind: (from our environment) if within our environment we have to learn, to adjust, to compete, to cooperate and to invent in order to survive. We can use and modify the 'past' proven patterns to serve our (current) need. We can influence, induce and/or manipulate conditions for our best advantage,... We are back in learning in the real world as our ancestors had done. What we learn would depend on what environment we are in. How competitive is for resources, how values in society are held 'good' and 'bad', how our collective knowledge (sciences and technologies) are deployed,... No toy lessons, no free lunches or anything-free (including dukkha-free), no escape from the webs of 'kamma' - our doings and relations, and no guarantee of freedom and rights, 'fair and just', equality or quality, biases and prejudice, lie and truth, ... The whole real world uncensored!

We can talk about re-culturing: queuing, respecting, playing fair,... no bribery, no corruption, no nepotism, no littering, stop polluting our air, water and home,... down to no poisoning ourselves with alcohol, drugs and gambling, not giving our children too much sugar and plastic toys. (As we know too much sugar and artificial sweeteners can harm. Plastics can harm.)

We have at present the real world to live in. But we have model schools and model universities to learn to prepare for the real world (they teach model patterns too). That sounds 'bad news' and 'stuck in the rut' with the present environment. If we can change our environment for the better, would our learning be 'better' (by whose definition?). Migration is in a way a change of one's  environment. But it is not for everyone. Changing the environment for everyone is possible. (Societies have not always been like that, they have changed into what they are now). So, how did they do it? What patterns can we learn and adapt for our environment? How do we go about solving our 'problems'? Using patterns? How do we make and propagate (or publicize) patterns for our target environment? When our patterns for the future become the norm, is then our environment changed into a 'new' environment? We do have 'examples' (patterns) in change of civilization (in history), can we use those patterns for our future? [I would say yes to all these questions. But we are the big part of our environment, enough of us have to say yes and follow the same patterns to make it work.]

Whoa! We are now in the bottom of a gully and everywhere is up. Not knowing where we want to go, all we can do is the pick a direction and push our way straight up or take a long spiral way.

I say we should try to catch and ride the digital waves - go with the waves but stay on top and try to steer to the 'best' landing place in sight. Is this a good pattern?

There is a general meeting of all people here. No it is not a voting to select speakers and leaders, but to voice your solution pattern and ... (that we don't see in our democracy system).

So let us continue our journey (on learning from ⭕️) but on another day ;-)

Notes.

[PS. what about ยาออกฤทธิ์ช้าๆ (Slow Release Remedy)? To remedy what? Our education system? Our children? Is this one big and bitter pill that releases some of its active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) as time goes by? Is this about releases of (more complex and potent patterns) ingredients as time goes by. Does slow release remedy design include time (as in aging and seasons), patients differences (as in sizes and habits) and their micro-environment factors?
Aren't we doing this type of things now in grades and years? Shall we make sure? More...next time.]

Integration of Ecosystem Theories: A Pattern: A Pattern - ‎Jørgensen - Cited by 860
Pattern theory is variational in that it describes the variability of the phenomena observed in different applications in terms of probability measures that are used with a Bayesian interpretation. This leads to inferences that will be realized by computer algorithms.

What are examples of pattern theory?
For example, if you are given a high-crime location, a pattern theorist would look at how an offender (1) established and then (2) gained access to the particular place where the crime was committed.

What are the theories of pattern recognition?

There are six main theories of pattern recognition: template matching, prototype-matching, feature analysis, recognition-by-components theory, bottom-up and top-down processing, and Fourier analysis. The application of these theories in everyday life is not mutually exclusive.

NB. In mathematics, Fourier analysis is the study of the way general (more complicated) functions may be represented or approximated by sums of simpler (trigonometric) functions.

The term “Pattern Theory” was introduced by Ulf Grenander in the 70s as a name for a field of applied mathematics which gave a theoretical setting for a large number of related ideas, techniques and results from fields such as computer vision, speech recognition, image and acoustic signal processing, pattern ...

Mindfulness, is a great way to start to recognize your patterns. Mindfulness is being aware and in tuned with the present moment (not thinking about the past or future). It's observing what is happening around you and inside of you without judgment.

Seeing patterns in unrelated things. Anyone can experience this, but if you live with schizophrenia, it may be part of a delusion. Apophenia, or seeing a pattern where one doesn't actually exist, isn't uncommon.

Seeing patterns is a natural function of the human brain intended to help you learn. You may sometimes find patterns in randomness, a process known as apophenia. When pattern-seeking becomes obsessive, excessive, or controls decisions you make throughout the day, you may be experiencing more than patternicity.

The human mind is wired to see patterns. Not only does the brain process information as it comes in, it also stores insights from all our past experiences. Every interaction, happy or sad, is catalogued in our memory. Intuition draws from that deep memory well to inform our decisions going forward.

The neocortex, the outermost layer of the brain, is found only in mammals and is responsible for humans' ability to recognize patterns. Although computer algorithms can spot patterns, an algorithm has not yet been developed that outperforms the human mind. --But chatGPT? may seem to outperform most people and clearly confirms that supports algorithmic based pattern recognition tools (to assist people) are feasible and that using machine for propagation of patterns among people are possible.

How to Break Out of BAD HABIT (Patterns)
Write down the past 5–10 times you have been in such a situation. ...
Write down the factors for each situation that led to the outcome. ...
Identify the commonalities across the factors. ...
Drill down into the cause of the factors. ...
Identify action steps to address the cause...
Do the action steps until there is change in the situation.

ผมรู้ว่าเป็นเรื่องราวดีๆ แต่ก็ไม่สามารถทำความเข้าใจได้เท่าไรครับ…วิโรจน์ ครับ

Dear วิโรจน์

I appreciate your time and your comment (that English turns you off).I thank you and I will try harder to write more in Thai. Though my skill in Thai may offend or make many people unhappy.

I could not really recommend https://translate.google.com/?sl=en&tl=th&op=websites but you can try and get a laugh out of it ;-)
