ในช่วง 30  กว่าปีที่ผ่านมา VUCA เป็นแนวคิดที่ธิบายสภาวะของโลกยุคใหม่ หรือ New World ได้เป็นอย่างดี และเป็นตัวแปรที่ผู้บริหารหรือผู้นำยุคใหม่ต้องใส่ใจอย่างยิ่ง แต่หลังจากการระบาดของโควิด19 ซึ่งเกิดขึ้นอย่างไม่คาดฝันในปลายปี 2519 ตัวแปรของโลกยุคใหม่เปลี่ยนไป และมีผู้เสนอตัวแปรอธิบายโลกยุคใหม่ที่มีชื่อย่อว่า BANI ขึันมา นักวิชาการจำนวนมากเชื่อว่า VUCA  ตายไป BANI เกิดใหม่มาแทนที่ แต่ผมเห็นว่าทั้งสองแนวคิดมีหลายอย่างเกี่ยวข้องและสอดคล้องกันครับ 

จากการศึกษาแนวคิด BANI ที่เสนอโดย Cascio  และที่หลายคนเขียนเกี่ยวกับเรื่องนี้แลัวพอสรุปได้ว่า BANI  เป็นคำที่เกิดขึ้นจากคำย่อยอักษรตัวต้นของคำว่า Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, และ Incomprehensible ซึ่งมีแนวคิดพื้นฐานดังนี้ 

Brittle (เปราะบาง) หมายความว่าแตกง่ายและไม่เป็นอย่างที่เห็น ซึ่งเห็นได้ชัดหลังจากการะบาดของโควิด19 ที่เพิ่มความเปราะบางให้กับหลายอย่างที่เราคิดว่าดีแล้ว มั่นคงแล้ว และอยู่ได้สบาย สิ่งเหล่านี้ทำให้เกิดการผลิกผันได้ตลอดเวลา ทุกอย่างดูแตกหักได้ง่ายและไม่ยั่งยืน แม้ว่าจะดูมั่นคง แต่ก็พร้อมจะล่มสลายได้ตลอดเวลา การพลิกผัน (disruption) เป็นปรากฏการที่เริ่มส่งผลต่อวิถีการเปลี่ยนแปลงของชีวิตและอาชีพมาระยะหนึ่งแล้วก่อนที่โควิด 19 จะเกิดขึ้น การพลิกผันอธิบายว่าทุกอย่างอาจจะถูกทำลาย หรือเบียดแทรกจากสิ่งที่ไม่คาดฝันได้ตลอดเวลา เราต้องเตรียมพร้อมอยู่เสนอม  แต่หลังเกิดโควิด 19 ขึ้น ยิ่งทำให้เราพบว่าการผลิกผันหรือผันผวนเป็นไปได้ตลอดเวลา เราจึงต้องพร้อมจะจัดการกับทุกปัญหาที่จะเกิดขึ้น และพร้อมจะรับผลที่เกิด และดำเนินชีวิตต่อไป แม้เราจะไม่มีวันแน่ใจว่าอะไรจะเกิดขึ้นต่อไปก็ตาม 

Anvious (กังวล) เป็นภาวะที่รู้สึกไม่แน่ใจ ไม่มั่นคง และไว้วางใจไม่ได้ แม้จะเหมือว่าเรามีทั้งความรู้ ข้อมูลสารสนเทศ มีเทคโนโลยี และเครื่องมือมากขึ้นกว่าก่อน แต่เราก็ยังต้องกังวล การมีขัอมูล หรือสารสนเทศมาก ไม่ได้แปลว่าเราจะเข้าใจสิ่งต่างได้ดีกว่าเดิม นอกจากนั้นก็มีข้อมูลเท็จอยู่มากมาย โควิด 19 เกิดขึ้นสองปีที่แล้วนั้นทำให้เรารู้ว่าเรามีความรู้และข้อมูลไม่เพียงพอจะจัดการกับมัน และสิ่งเหล่านี้ยังจะเกิดขึ้นอย่างไม่คาดฝันอีกในอนาคต แล้วจะไม่ให้เรากังวลได้อย่างไร 

Nonlinear (ไม่เรียงแบบเส้นตรง) หมายความว่าไม่มีอะไรเกิดเรียงแบบเส้นตรง และพยากรณ์ได้อีกต่อไป สาเหตุและผลไม่มีโครงสร้างอธิบายที่ชัดเจนอย่างที่เราเคยคิดว่าเราเข้าใจอีกต่อไป นอกจากนี้สาเหตุที่ทำให้เกิดผลอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง อาจจะมาจากหลายทิศทางโดยไม่มีสัญญาณเตือน ทุกอย่างไม่ได้เกิดแบบเรียงลำดับ ไม่ใช่เริ่มต้น แล้วตอไป และในสุดก็จบลง ด้วยลักษณะดังกล่าวนี้ แผนระยะยาวจึงใช้ไม่ได้ สิ่งสำคัญคือความสามารถในการจัดการปัญหาเฉพาะหน้าได้ดี เราไม่มีเวลาจะต้องเสียใจและครำครวญกับสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้น แต่ต้องทำให้ดีที่สุดในทุกกรณี  แนวคิดและเทคโนโลยีดิจิทัลเป็นจุญแจของโลกไร้เชิงเส้น (nonlinear world) ทั้งในตอนนี้ และต่อไปอีกนานครับ 

Incomprehensible (ไม่อาจจะเข้าใจได้)  แปลว่าสิ่งที่เราคิดว่าเข้าใจ อาจจะไม่เป็นอย่างที่เราเข้าใจ ในโลกที่เต็มไปด้วยลักษณะของความเปราะบาง กังวลใจ และไม่เรียงแบบเส้นตรงนี้ ทุกอย่างที่เกิดขึ้นจึงยากที่จะเข้าใจ หรือเข้าใจไม่ได้เลย ท่านจะเชื่อหรือไม่ก็ตามว่าหลังจากที่เรามีความรู้มากขึ้น มีข้อมูลและสารสนเทศมากขึ้น มีประสบการณ์มากขึ้น ซึ่งเราคิดว่าเราน่าจะเข้าใจและจัดการสิ่งต่าง ๆ ได้ดีกว่าก่อน แต่จริง ๆ เป็นไปในทางตรงกันข้ามครับ ที่แย่กว่านั้นคนส่วนใหญ่ยังติดนิสัยคิดแบบเส้นตรง จีงทำให้เราเข้าใจและแก้ปัญหาไม่ค่อยได้ครับ 

แม้ว่าแนวคิดเกี่ยวกับ BANI จะเสนอมุมมองต่อโลกแตกต่างไปจาก VUCA จนมีผู้กล่าวว่า ‘VUCA ตายไป  BANI  เกิดขึ้น’ แต่ในความเห็นของผมมองว่า BANI  คือการเจริญเติบโตของ VUCA จริงอยู่ BANI มีหลายอย่างที่ไม่มีใน VUCA  แต่ก็มีหลายอย่างที่คงไว้และเชื่อมต่อกัน เสมือนหนึ่งเป็นความเติบโตของแนวคิดที่พยามเข้าใจการเปลี่ยนแปลของโลก 

และจริง ๆ แล้วทุกสิ่งในโลกก็เปลี่ยนแปลงเช่นนี้มาแต่่ไหนแต่ไรแล้ว เพียงแต่เราจะเข้าใจหรือไม่ และใช้ประโยชน์จากรความเข้าใจเหล่านั้นอย่างไรเป็นสำคัญคับ

Is BANI replaced VUCA? 

VUCA has been the best concept describinng our changing world in the last 30 years or so, but after the breakout of COVID 19, it seems that  VOCA provides not sufficient variales to describe the new world anymore. Many authors wrote that ‘VUCA is dead,  BANI is born’, which I do not really agree with the suggestion. Before you decide, please scrim through what is the concept of BANI, as firstly proposed by  Cascio, and mentioned many others that could be summarized as follow: 

BANi is a acronym made up of the words Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, and Incomprehensible.

Brittle: meaning ,easily broken, another character of the new world after the breakout of Covid-19, it adds a new face to change: disrupted change.  Everything seems fragile and vulnerable although it might look stable at surface, but could be collapsed. Disruption is a new concept describing sudden erupts that replace present workable and reliable tools you have, either your methods, technology, business, or even your ways of living. So, there is nothing could be sure of anymore.

Anxious: meaning not feeling secure although it seems we have everything ready, sufficient knowledge, information, best choice, etc, but still insecure. Too much information might might cause anxiety how to cope and use the right information, beside flake news. The pandemic two years ago and now shows us that we don’t have sufficient knowledge and data to deal it effectively. More to come yet, then, how could we be not anxious.

Nonlinear: meaning nothing comes in sequences and easily predictable anymore, causes and effects are no longer a feasible structure as we used to comprehend. Besides, causes might come in any directions without warning signs. Everting seems to be a non-linear action, no beginning, no middle, and no end. Long term plans seem to be useless, we have to deal with each case one by one at best we can do. No time to regret its result, but accept it, deal with it, and move on.  Digital theory is the key of nonlinear world now and long time to come. 

Incomprehensible: meaning almost everything is hard to understand and make sense. In the brittle, anxious, and nonlinear world, everything seems to be unclear, less understandable, and incomprehensible. Believe or not that more knowledge and information, we should be able to understand things better and solve problems more effectively, but it is another way around. In addition, we are trapped in linear habit thinking that make it more difficult to understand what is going on and cope with the problems. 

Although BANI, the new concept, is very useful and helpful, but not to replace VUCA as being said by many authors that, VUCA is dead and BANI is born. Rather, BANI is a grown-up VUCA. Thanks to both authors of the important concepts of the new world, but the only old world of new version we have to live in. Although it might be more difficult to cope, but we have to do our best to live with and save our only world.
