Dictionary of Problem Words in English
Wire
Once considered informal when
used to mean “a telegram” or “to telegraph,”
Wire is now standard usage in these senses.
These are hackneyed expression involving wire:
“under the wire” (“within limits,” “by a deadline”),
“pull wire” (“to use connections or association to advantage”)
“on the wire” (“on the telephone”), and
“lay wire
for” (“to make preparations”).
I like to add to “ออกเสียง wire = ‘WAHYUHR’” (ไว เอ่อ หรือ วาย เอ่อ). Thais usually do not give enough attention to “ending of word”, so ‘fire’(ไฟ เอ่อ) sounds the same as ‘file’(ไฟ เล่อ); ‘mine’ (มาย เน่อ) the same as ‘my’ (มาย) or ‘mind’(มาย เนอ ดือ) ;-)
