(ศีล ข้อ๕) เมาแล้วขับ
People do not see the importance of the Buddhist (5) sīla. Let us go through them again from the beginning. First. people are confused about sīla. Do we 'laympersons' follow sīla 5 or sīla 8 and monks follow sīla 227 and nuns more? What is sīla anyway?
Buddhism as we know today was not 'called a religion' in the Buddha's time, but called "dhammavinaya" (53 times in the tipitaka) or ariyadhammavinaya. In simple translation Buddhism is the 'code of conduct' (dhammavinaya) for 'civilized people' (ariyans). Clearly that means 'super people' have 'code of conduct' or a well-conditioned way to behave (live). [I have said enough times that we live by what we do/behave.] So, sīla is simply just 'the code of conduct'. For ordinary people (the latter learned monks said) a set of 5 points to practice (drill) is enough. Sīla in Dhammavinaya (Buddhism) is not the same as the Ten Commandments or the "Don't", but the set of practical "exercises" (or drills) [note: the Pāli chanting ...manī sikhā... (valuable lesson to learn)] to improve ourselves.

Now let review the sīla in modern terms
#1) Learn not to kill -- respect the right to Life
#2) Learn not to steal -- respect the right to Property
#3) Learn not to violate relations -- respect the right to Family
#4) Learn not to lie -- respect the right to Truth (or Fact)
#5) Learn not to consume alcohol and drugs -- respect the commitment to above rights by not losing control and responsibility through the effects of alcohol or drugs.
The news stories as follow show the case for sīla #5.
How long can we keep failures in sīla #5 as our excuses for harm done to others and ourselves?

Yes, the conditions for poverty and lower education can be like in the cartoon. But IQ is not in the genes. How many people rise from poverty and become leaders in our society? And how many from hi-so and middle-class are just pests in our society?
This cartoon manages to 'stylise' and incorrectly 'classify' people not by their virtues but by their circumstances (most outside their own control - we cannot choose where and when we are born). People should be respected for the way they live and work (they can control their virtue and contribution to society).
It is our failure to see street sweepers as 'our primary frontline warriors against insanitary invasions' or to see that 'our feet needed more care than our face' that gives misconception in our regard for other people.
In a way, this cartoon promote selfishness and exploitation of people in disadvantaged situations. Shame!
