Bear และ borne และ born

ให้รายละเอียดการใช้ “bear” “borne” “born”

รูปที่ผันแปรของ “bear” คือ “bears” “bore” และ “borne”

อย่างไรก็ดี รูป “past” และ participle “-ed” มีการใช้น้อย

ถ้า “บางคน ‘bears’ pain” หรือ “สถานการณ์ลำบาก”

หมายถึง “พวกเขายอมรับสิ่งนั้น อย่างกล้าหาญ” เช่น

‘Boys are encouraged to be tough and bear pain, to prove they’re a man.’

การใช้ในแนวทางนี้ สามารถแทนที่ได้ด้วย กริยา “endure” เช่น

(ออกเสียง เน้นพยางค์ สอง ‘doo r’ เขียนว่า “en-doo r”)

‘Many people have to endure pain without specialist help.’

ถ้า คุณ “‘can’t bear’ บางสิ่ง/บางคน”

หมายถึง “คุณไม่ชอบ สิ่งนั้น/พวกเขา เป็นอย่างมาก” เช่น

‘I can’t bear him.’

ถ้า คุณ “’can’t bear’ to do บางสิ่ง” หมายถึง

“คุณไม่อาจทำสิ่งนั้น เพราะมันทำให้คุณ ไม่มีความสุขอย่างยิ่ง” เช่น

‘She couldn’t bear to talk about it.’

ถ้า คุณ “’can’t stand’ บางสิ่ง/บางคน”

หมายถึง “คุณ ไม่ชอบ สิ่งนั้น/คนนั้น เป็นอย่างยิ่ง” เช่น

‘He kept on asking questions and I couldn’t stand it any longer.’

ข้อควรระวัง:

อย่ากล่าวว่า “You ‘can’t stand’ to do บางสิ่ง.”

ถ้า คุณ “tolerate” หรือ “put up with” บางสิ่ง หมายถึง

“คุณ ยอมรับ สิ่งนั้น” ถึงแม้คุณจะไม่ชอบ หรือ ไม่เห็นด้วย กับสิ่งนั้น

โดยที่ “tolerate” มีความเป็น ทางการ มากกว่า “put up with” เช่น

‘The school does not tolerate bad behavior.’

‘The local people have to put up with a lot of tourists.’

และให้รายละเอียด การใช้ “bear” “stand” “suffer” และ “put up with”

คุณ สามารถ กล่าวว่า “บางคน ‘suffer’ pain”

หรือ “ประสบการณ์ที่ไม่น่ายินดี” เช่น

‘He suffered a lot of discomfort.’

‘Young suffered imprisonment and intimidation.’

แทนที่ “suffer” เมื่อ กล่าวว่า “บางคน ‘tolerate’ คนที่ไม่น่าคบ”

อย่าใช้ว่า “You ‘can’t suffer’ them”

ให้ใช้ว่า “You ‘can’t stand’ them” หรือ “can’t bear them” เช่น

‘She said she couldn’t stand him.’

‘I can’t bear kids.’
