And on the very first page, I came to read, the Buddha said “…เราจักรออยู่ในเมืองสาวัตถีนี้แล จนถึงวันครบ ๔ เดือนแห่งฤดูฝนเป็นที่บานแห่งดอกโกมุท…”. I couldn’t hold my curiosity anymore. So, I opened the Royal Society Thai Dictionary and a few other dictionaries. (Why several dictionaries? Because there are different meanings for ‘same words’ in different dictionaries. Which dictionary should we trust? …)

So, after all this research work, what did I learn from “…เราจักรออยู่ในเมืองสาวัตถีนี้แล จนถึงวันครบ ๔ เดือนแห่งฤดูฝนเป็นที่บานแห่งดอกโกมุท…”? A lot on Pali and the way date/time was referenced back in the Buddha time. Astronomy (kattikā: the constellation of Pleiades.) was in common use. And I learned more about “waterlilies” and (sadly) that we need to validate our source of information (reference websites and dictionaries).
But did I learn - what colour is ดอกโกมุท?

บัวใต้น้ำ... สี อะไร ..น่าจะขึ้นอยู่กับ. สภาพ ของดอก. ที่จะบานพ้นน้ำได้หรือ ไม่ ถ้าจะเน่าก็สีหนึ่งถ้าจะบานได้เขียวสดใสหุ้มดอกอยู่ เป็นสีตามธรรมชาติ . .(คิดเอาเอง..อ้ะะ)..

: For your answer. So much we don't know about 'waterlily', water and our sensory perception. I imagined myself looking at a waterlily flower - below the water surface-. Both the flower and I were under mirky water. You know, as they say, when we look up references for answers, the info we get can be as clear as mud. ;-)

เคยมีบัวค่ะ เอาอ่างอาบน้ำที่ไม่ใช้แล้วมาปลูก เลยปลูกสองสามชนืดอยู่ด้วยกันจึงสังเกตเห็นบัวใต้น้ำหลายชนิด ต่างก็มีสีเขียวแต่อ่อนแก่ไม่เท่ากันค่ะ ต่อเมื่อพ้นน้ำแล้วก็เป็นสีสวยงามตามพันธุ์ กำลังจะหามาปลูกใหม่ค่ะ

Thank you GD : I have seen lotuses and waterlilies grown in buckets and pots in Thailand - even in Bonzai forms. We have blue and yellow waterliles in our dams. (We also have wild ducks, wild geese, wild insects, kangaroos, ... they like waterlilies too ;-)
I am calling for a revision of the Royal Society Thai Dictionary. I need to be 'fact-based' (evidence-based) so we can see that we really need higher quality RSTD. Glad you still like it. I've learned in the past that each piece of (technical) evidence reduces the number of readers who read to the end (the bottom line). So it is a bit complicate. I want change, but change can only come with number of readers and conversations in public (because Royal Society have a protocol for public relations).
Sigh!

It may be of interest to some people. For most kinds of waterlilies, the young (underwater) flowers have 'white petals'. (I opened many flowers before I could say this. ;-)
